New Sound System Advice

Hi.

I have £200 to £300 to spend on a sound system for my clio but dont have much knowledge about what the best speakers are to buy.

Can anyone give me some advice or reccomend some speakers for me?

I like listening to Indie, Rock and Dance music.

I already have an Alpine CDA-9885R head unit.

Do you want sound quality or SPL (volume)?
For that sort of money there are really 2 companies - Raindow and Focal
Try searching here. With the discount code u also get free delivery.
You will want to allow some money for sound deadening, and also amping them is great. For a lot more help. the guys at talk audio will help you out a lot.

Totalling £290 then you need some wiring. So will just break £300. But thats what i woudl choose. That would give good sound quality at a reasonable volume.
You may want to consider dropping the quality of the componeents and getting a subwoofer, and either a separate amp for them or a 2 + 1 amp. So it can power the sub and the components in one package

For £200-300 your best bet is a decent pair of components for the front, a 10 or 12" sub (in a sealed box) and a decent 4 channel amp to power everything

Then if you want a sub. Drop those components if you're still sticking to £300. Also drop the amp. Now subwoofers are tricky... Get very expensive for quality see....Then you have to consider boxes for them...I have a sealed box. Which i custom made, in it i had a cheap subwoofer and i loved it with my standard speakers and my aftermarket headunit. However, now i have my new components they go down to 60hz. And when they are amped i don't really require my subwoofer. So i took it out.
Subwoffers if you buy them active they tend to provide no where near the power they state. So i'd be inclined to get a passive one and use a separate amp. That will power both the sub and components, however, it will only leave you £60 for components and sound deadening.
If i were you i'd just get a good set of components. Many to choose from on CAD and then i'd amp them up and sound deaden the doors. Sorted.

Also do i not need to upgrade the speakers in the back?

I wouldn't personally upgrade the backs, some people do though. And yeh thats exactly what you want. The fronts dont have to be 13cm you can fit 17cm if you make a mount for them. There are quite a few guides of how to do that on here. You have to be a member though to look at them. So 17cm will fit, just need some slight modification. 17's sound a hell load better IMO.

Stick to 13cm, makes life easy!

Spend £100 on speakers (either just for front, or back aswell)

£40-£60 on a subwoofer

£100 on a 4 channel amp.

£60 on wiring/sound deadening.

Remember - Spend money to save money!!! (You may want to upgrade to 2 subs in the future or better speakers....) May aswell get the better ones for another £50 rather than spend another £150 quid.

I would recommend a decent headunit to start with. Then you can buy budget and get the most out of the other things.

Alpine CDA9812 is a good call. About £180 on the web.

Then either get some decent components and get an amp and sub at a later date, or just get some alright components with a cheap active sub.

Yes.

Has you headunit got any pre-outs? You will need at least 2 for this set-up.

I would sort out the sound deadening if thats your set-up, or you'll get vibrating panels all over the place.

Amp is fine.

I don't think you will get the most out of those comps if you don't deaden.

Find some cheaper comps, you won't need ones that expensive with that amp. I'd go for the model down from that, spend around £50-£60 on eBay!

I am running these as Co-axs in the back of mine and they sound really good. Although they do work well with a sub and amp. Didn;t find them punchy enough without the sub.

budget at £300;

4 ch amp---JBL GTO 1004E LINKY
front components---DLS B5 LINKY
12" sub---JBL GT4 EBAY LINKY , the link is for a matching pair, simply sell the second to a mate....

then you simply require an enclosure and wiring kit.....

for sound deadening on the cheap use 'Wickses' high tack flashing tape, not as good as Dynamat, but works out much cheaper,(at this level one layer should suffice).....

not kept track of the overall cost, but it should come out within budget, (even more so if you purchase from recognised Ebay retailers)...

experiment with placement and aiming using Blu-Tack to temporarily mount the tweeters.....

i would start on the A pillars, say 3" above the dash, aiming wise try directly at each other first, then slightly open them out by aiming at say opposite door window then at opposite seat headrest etc etc.....

once you've tried each seperate location for a few days, select the one that 'YOU' prefer.....
