new to clios... buyers guide?

hey guys my mate is looking for a new car at the moment,
he really likes the clios and after seening a few mates with them theyre pretty good little cars,
i myself am a motorsport mechanic so working on a car isnt a problem..
i was just wondering is there anything in particular to watch out on when looking to buy a mk2 clio?
also his reason for going for a 1.1 is the insurence costs and because
he had penalty points on his licence before he had one...

just to add the cars hes looking at are about a grand but hes willing to pay more if the right car comes around..
if anyone knows of a low cc clio within the club for sale with a good history and possibly a few mods let me know too!

Dont think they do a 1.1 clio, Engines start at 1.2 i believe.

The 1.2 is actually a 1149cc engine, so technically 1.1

its advertised as a 1.1 still i thought it was a 16v 1.2..
links to any threads i couldnt dig to much up that was reoccurring?
any common parts that need paying attention to?
and i cant belive i see 2 172s selling for under 1400 in the forsale section?! why do they sell so cheap?

I guess they are getting on a bit now and there are plenty about, just before Christmas is never a good time to sell either.
