Newbie from Swindon

Morning all. Thought I'd join up as I'm looking at getting my wife a 197. We were looking at Megane R26's and BMW 130i's but we have quite got the money for something reasonable.

We are hoping to sell my wife's 106 GTi this weekend and I'm off to test drive a red 56-plate 197 at a garage in Swindon later this morning. Vicky wants a white one really but it doesn't look like a popular 197 colour!

Out of interest has anyone gone from a 106 GTi to a 197? Do they feel as quick / quicker? I'm assuming it will feel a little more refined, which always makes cars feel slower when they aren't!

Clio RS 197 - 197 BHP Its all in the name!

Seriously though, I haven't been in a 106 GTI for a good few years but I'm pretty sure that the Clio will feel quicker. Enjoy your Test Drive bud :D

Thanks. Unfortunately that's just north of our budget. We'd probably end up with a Megane R26 or BMW 130i with that amount to spend (then keep it longer). Clio is likely to stay for a couple of years max I think. Them she will need something bigger!

ok but it might be worth contacting steve here on the forums to see what he has in 182s etc

Too old says the wife! She's very fussy. On the other hand I have two teenage BMW's with starship mileage! Something isn't working right there is it!?!

What you will notice is the unbelievable grip and handling. If you buy a nice colour/spec, I don't see any reason why you couldn't drive for a couple of years and not lose that much money on it, as the prices have levelled out of late.

Either way, you will both enjoy it.

The only downside for me was the MPG figure - Just doesn't quite have the speed to justify the MPG figure IMO.

You've just reminded me unsold that 8 years ago in about 2 weeks time! Doesn't time fly!

I nearly broke it when i got rid! I believe it is still on the road to this day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clios are pretty good tbf. I've had a couple and now a 172 track car i'm building up. My friends 197 always seems very capable, certainly quicker in a standard form than a standard/lightly modded 106 gti. Would bet a 106 Gti in every way so i'd say its a very well matched upgrade!

I did check and the car wasn't taxed or insured (can't remember which but just one of those!) a couple of months back. It's bound to be on a forum somewhere still. I still think I was lucky to sell it for £3.5k back in 2003. Even if I had spent double that in the 12 months before.

While the 198 isn't Vicky's first choice (it was before she found R26 Megane's though) it does offer a newer, lower mileage car for less money and as you say is a nice step up. Think we want climate control, Recaro's and Xenon lights if possible so that may push things into Megane R26 territory!

Very nice car, but I'd have a 130i M-Sport parked outside before she could disagree if the budget was close to that!
