newbie looking for 172 advice

First off ... would just like to say hello to everyone. Just stumbled across the site, and have to save theres alot of good stuff on here.

Secondly ... got a couple of questions for all of you out there with 172's
i'm looking to get a ph2 172... about 02/03 plate. most of them that i'm looking at have around 31K-41k. from what i understand (please correct me if im wrong) theres a big service at around 36k?????

Any of you had this done yet.. if so how much did it cost and what addtional stuff did they have to replace... water pump / powersteering pump????. just trying to work out potential costs....

also would you get a car that was a few thou off of the big service or one that was a few thou past it?.. part of me says go for the lower mileage... but the true yorkshireman in me says go for the one that someone else has already paid the costs on!

36k is a medium service the aux belt needs changing which is a bumper and light light job off.

I'd pay for one pre the work and then make sure I got it done by someone I trusted. It would depend on price though.

I've just bought a 172 that's done 33k miles and the dealer serviced it before collection. If you are buying from the trade then they really all should be offering the same, buying private then the cost will be a factor to remember. Thankfully it's not a major service.

Welcome to cliosport. Like most things people will disagree with each other, but I reckon go for one with less than 36k miles. I think it's safer to get some other things replaced at 36,000 miles such as the timing belt. Try and get about £500 off to cover a big service. Have some really good oil put in, fit a decent exhaust (the Renault one's fall off anyway) and replace the brake pads with a higher spec version. That way you know the car is well set up for a few years to come. Enjoy, they are great cars.

sneeks - glad your pleased wiv your purchase mate... tbh i dont think having an import would bother me at all... although i can understand where you were coming from...I would have been pissed wiv the dealer too.

eddie - great posts mate.. really informative.. just the things i needed. Didnt realise there were that many problems... although most do seem to be minor.

Like I said in my thread, I'm not bothered at all that the car is an import but with the dealers inaccuracy concerning it. Thankfully all resolved now

None of those faults listed put me off buying a 172 either, the car really does make you smile while driving it If you can find one in good condition then you really should consider buying it. have you test driven one yet?

no not had the pleasure yet.... kinds hopeing its gonna be a something like my old mk1 golf gti
