Hello guys!

ive just purchased a 182 cup today & theres a slight rattle on the engine, apparently sounds like a pulley bearing or alt bearing? It's sounding very Tractor like.. Lol, not to mention I love it. LOADS!
Any ideas?
excuse my grammar my iPhone is shocking on these forums. Any help appreciated!

Have a search of "dephaser pulley" both on here and YouTube Amelia. That is often said to give a tractor esq sound when it's shot.

Also, welcome along!

Edit: anything like this?

Welcome Amelia :)

I tihnk the noise you are hearing is most likely your dephaser pulley

Does it sound like this?

If it is the dephaser it will go quiet when revved then noisey again at idle.

If this is the case it's a fairly big job, requiring the cambelt being changed at the same time - budget for around £550.

Be aware the cambelts needs specialist tools and must be carried out by someone who knows what they are doing otherwise your timing will be out and will loose about 25bhp and will be doing circa 5-10 mpg less than it should

Thank you very much! :) he's already had the cambelt changed, would I still need to have it changed again? If that's what I've got to do then I guess it needs doing. It passed its mot with it though, does that sound quite right? Amelia

Yes it is good practice to change the belt - if the whole kit has been changed recently then you can just change the belt rather than the whole kit.

It isn't an mot failure - the noise is usually caused by a car missing oil changes or having dirty/cheap oil - the dephaser is oil driven so can wear if the oil is not changed regularly.

Bear in mind it is rare they actually break - the will be noisey for ages, but obviously good practice to have it changed earlier than later.

I suggest you join the club - it's only £12 and the discounts you get will save you that a hundred times over! :) (Plus there is a fantastic specialist section which would save you money!)

Thank you for your help :) can I buy the kits off eBay? I've just had a look and they're on there for about £250.. I know a few people who are mechanics like, so could possibly get away with not paying labour costs etc. would you suggest an oil change too or not?

how long would you say it would take to change the belts & pulley? Any idea?

how do I join?

As long as the belt is a gates belt it should be ok.

The dephaser is only available genuine as far as im aware

1000000% get someone with proper experience to do the belt change for you - they need correct locking tools and need to know how to do it or it WILL be wrong - trust me!

100% an oil change with a dephaser change as you don't want old dirty oil running through your new dephaser

To join you need to follow the links on how to become a member - it is definately worth it and will gain you access to the specialist section - i'm sure there will be one close to you to carry the work out
