Newsgroups

Done a search and seen a bit about them on here but what exactly are they?

torrents seem to be doing crap at the moment and i can't get above 1kbs at times.

They're a place you can upload/download files from. Unlike torrents, you aren't connected to other machines P2P, and you're not relying on someone serving those files. Newsgroup files are kept on central servers and are therefore available all the time. Plus you've got a damn good chance of Maxing your line out with a download from a newsgroup (especially if you have a download manager).

I use Easynews.com and have done for over 2 years now. I get 20Gb p/m for around £5.50, and I'm very happy with them. However, there are a lot more out there and I'm sure others will post the newsgroups they're with.

  Mondeo ST220
so whats the selection like? with torrents you can usually find what your after somewhere, are these more restricted?

  172
I find pretty much anything I want. I don't really do music downloads, so you may prefer Ares or something like that, but for movies/tv programmes, it's great. Downloading popular American TV shows for instance, I can usually get them within 10 minutes.

nice one, cheers for your help, will have a look around, alot of my downloads are albums and movies so looking for the best one for those really

If you do a search within this forum for newsgroups, you'll find plenty of links to various newsgroups :)

I can hel get you started, pay £8/9 a month for access (unlimited) and 25p a week for searching.

Private torrent trackers get suff quicker by about 12 hours maximum - usually about 4-6.

  Mondeo ST220
so you pay a subscription to someone for the use of there server then use something else to search and find things??????

Well you dont have to.

Breakdown of what I do:

Pay for high speed usenet access (ISP's offer a slow, low retention service free)
Pay for indexing (searching) this is not needed, but bloody helpful

I pay say £10 a month for unlimited, full 1.1 mbps downloads, searching can be done free but I find the site I use is the best.

You search, download a file that triggers a download of other files - like a torrent, but a .nzb

 now im very confused. so say i sign up with one of these newsgroups sites, do i not just search on them and download what i want from them?

Im offering to help get you started to use newsgroups.

The files are stored on a server (usenet)

Paid for newsgroups offer high speed access to these files, wither unlimited/speed capped/capacity capped)

You pay for access to the files (although if you wanna wait a week you can usually do it for free)

there are sites that search usenet for .nzb's (like torrent sites, they give you the file needed to download the actual files)

I can guide you VIA MSN to set this up.....its simple, and if you use torrents and have to keep a 1:1 ratio, this is much better - pure leeching

So say i sign up for easynews, what will i need to do then? Download a file manager type program like Azureus?

I read the newsgroup tutorial on here but it just left me confused!

I use Free Download Manager

Once you have an account use /global4 to search for any file you need, if it's a full file, right-click and save, if you have the download manager running and set up correctly it will automatically detect that you want to download it and will prompt you if you want download manager to download it instead. You may find that your files are in par's or nzb's (I've never actually used nzb's, however), in which case you would need to find the par viewer. That will general give you access to the full file itself.

You need in general:

Newsleecher to download files
Newzbin for searching
Newshosting for access to usenet

I signed up to newshosting, setup newsleecher (grabit wouldnt work)
Signed up to newzbin
Searched for XXXXXXXX
downloaded XXXXXXXX.nzb
An hour later had what I wanted

is thier anyway newsgroups which are free so i can test to see what the fuss is about? Would rather not pay a tenner for something that i would never use.

Giganews sometimes offer a free trial -as do others......Jeez is a tenner that much?

If so, stick to torrents they are free -
I knew I would use NG's after I heard all about them, have never looked back.

4347GB downloaded to date - nothing uploaded.

I can send yo a free client tomorrow - not on that machine right now..

Many offer a free months trial - Newshosying WILL max out a 20mb cableline so with them you have no worries

$10 is f**k all you tight fecker, lol

Right, i've signed up for easynews and downloaded FDM but now i'm stuck.

I'm looking at easynews/global4, logged in, went to main members area and was faced with a rather horrible looking interface. i searched for a file i wanted in alt.binaries.media and it listed all 34 parts of the file, rather than being able to download all the RAR files in one go. Am i doing something wrong?

people are so pikey.

you expect to get movies/games/apps for free, but you won't pay a tenner for the hosting to do that.

seriously, you need to have a word with yourself.

If i find something on newzbin, does that mean i can download it even if i can't find it on easynews?

I downloaded newsleecher but it won't connect to www.easynews.com for some reason. My passwrods are the same

I just followed Griffs tutorial but something's not right.

1) signed up to www.easynews.com

2) Downloaded newsleecher and followed the setup options

3) signed up at v3.newzbin.com

4) downloaded and set up quickpar

I think the part where i'm struggling is putting in the server name as it wont connect

if you use the beta version of newsleecher 3.9 then you won't need to do anything with the par files, it will do all the par'ing and extracting for you.

rite so i'm about to pay for newsleecher and easynews. is that rite? everything i need to get going?

You don't need newsleecher with easynews....

..detailed explanation of how easynews follows in following message incase you all end up buying newsleecher for no reason!

Right..easynews..

1) You don't need newsleecher or any NNTP client because it's a web based interface. You just use your favourite download manager (getright, free download manager, flashget etc) to download at super fast speeds from the easynews server.

2) Because it's a web based interface, you actually download less than you would for the same file on an NNTP connection.

3) It looks like crap, but fortunately they went for substance over prettyness and it's the mutts nutts in functionality.

4) They have brilliant completion and 30+ day retention.

First Important URL:

http://members.easynews.com/global4

this is a search engine that searches across all groups for a (regular expression) file, subject, poster etc. You can specify only to look for movies, pictures, executables, archives etc and even specify minimum sizes.

Furthermore, any files which are in a rar archive, the server automatically unrars and you can download just the files in the archive which saves you having to mess about at the end. In addition, if any of the rar files are missing and there are enough par files available, the server automatically fixes and then provides the direct link to the unrared file(s).

Second Important URL

http://members.easynews.com/zipmanager.html

You can add files from the easynews into a zip file and download them in bulk. This is super useful and a big time saver.

In addition, on the zip manager page is "Import NZB File" which takes an nzb file and then collects all the listed files and puts them in a single zip file for you to download. Super simple.

I've used usenet since 1994 (demon used to operate an open "test" server on and off) and this is the best service I've ever used - and I've used quite a few in those years!

and don't come complaining to me in the morning when you've all got sore wrists! ;)

lol!

But in seriousness, thanks a lot for that it's so simple to do it that way. I'm downloading at a poxy 350kbps compared to about 80 max, but more like 12 on torrents.

Remember to tell your downloiad manager to use multiple connections, say at least 8. I max out my connection no problem from the easynews server so you'll go as fast as you possibly can.

Which download manager are you using? I just did it through downthemall on Firefox as it wouldn;t open with FDM for some reason.*Edit

OK, it finished downloading through firefox and then as soon as that finished it opened up in FDM and downloaded in seconds! Strange.

cheers for your help sn00p. got easynews and got a download manager (freedownloadmanager) can't work out how to do it though, trying my best to follow griffs guide

depends on their ISP's traffic shaping system as to whether they can max out their line or not.

True. Only way to shape easynews is by the server IP though as it's just a normal HTTP transaction, so in that respect it's at the top of the pile in terms of the possibility of it not being shaped to hell!

I know in the past plusnet were doing this though, I ditched them long ago though!
