Nikon D60 or Canon 400D

After my house got broken into last week and my D40 was taken, I have been given £500 to spend at jessops to buy a new camera, card and filter. I don't know if to go for the D60 or the 400D.

I don't really know anything about photography but I want to get into it but not too sure which camera to go for. As far as I can see they are about the same spec.

I'm more suede towards the D60 because its only just come out but again I'm not sure.

Looking for advice and opinions on what I should get.

I don't know the D60 spec but it sounds like a rebadged D40?

If your happy with using AF-S lenses with the Nikon go have a play with both and take it from there..

D80/450D if you can stretch. Failing that D40/X + 55-200mm VR would be my pick.

D60 is basically a D40x with sensor cleaning and airflow control system + can be bundled with 18-55VR.

No experience with 400D but I love the D60....

I think its going to be the D60 then. I'll buy a 55-120mm lense in about a month or so.

why not get a refurbished 400d off the canon ebay site for less than £300 and spend the rest on glass?
