Nitrogen in tyres?

Mate has access to supply of the stuff.

Would this reduce / eliminate the pressure build up experienced on track.

Should reduce checking pressure times as the stuff don't seem to escape as easy as air, larger molecules.

i've never used it, but its primary use is in motorsport, given that it's supposed to help stabilise pressure variations with heat cycles. it's more widely available than it used to be but i've always thought that it'd be handier to have a personal supply as i like checking pressures regularly (if only to check for slow punctures, etc - and the act of checking will release air)

i'd say slap some in if you've an easy regular supply - nowt to lose

So happens that when I did the rears on the Vee the other month, Micheldever tyres offer Nitrogen filling for £2 (which is nought on top of the tyre price) and so thought I'd give it a go. Better fuel consumption and slower leakage ... bugger knows if it's true but at least I've got green valve caps ;).

i wouldn't get too hung up about it on a road/track car, we ran a €2million single seater 700bhp prototype on "dried" air with prototype Michelin slicks no bother, a clio will be fine on normal air ;)

Exactly! Water contamination is the biggest issue so if you can remove this you're going to be in a massively better position regarding stable tyre pressures etc.

When you get into serious single seater and prototype stuff then Nitrogen can be useful. For road cars its just a way for the tyre places to make another quid per wheel!
