Are cut down plates legal? As in the ends lopped off where theyre blank, as you can buy those plates that are completely cut out and just have a few mm of white following the contour of the letters and numbers, which Im sure somebody said were legal when they were posted up.

I went into Gt-Grafix in Ashton yesterday, and was chatting to the lad in there..he said 3d text was illegal, but Mercedes supply all new cars with this type of plate...so define the legalities?!?! The only but allowed on the left hand side is really the Euro emblem and the letters GB (ESP, IRE, etc.,)

It would all depend on the copper really...I know most ignore real criminals, and go for motorists (easy option!) but if you meet up with one who is a complete b*****d, they could attempt to do you for perverting the cause of justice if your plate cannot be read fully (could be misconstrewed by someone reading camera photo, or ANPR cameras (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) so the choice is down to you, but they will make you sign a disclaimer to cover them in case youre pulled!!!

Not 100% sure but i think for the plate to be completely legal it must show the postcode or the name of the place that manufactured it at the bottom not any other text
that is true mate, however you CAN have text on it, but the postcode and business name must be on it ASWELL, it HAS to be there

to be 100% legale they need to show dealer postcode on bottom now. On mine from gt grafix, I have:-

Va Va Voom on botoom of plate

blue border

GB flag with St George underneath

Renault diamond logo running through background of plate

looks good!

and stuck them on to avoid any holes anywhere, so none even on the car either unlike most cars that get them drilled in at the dealership.

legal style digits; standard (basic black block letters)

hi-line(as above with gray line running thro middle)

3d(self explanatry)

carbon(little honeycombe)
well i was informed by an officer of Merseyside police ONLY standard black digits are allowed, and this is the woman who inspects our number plate log, the same person who will issue us with a £2000 fine if we bugger it up !

forgive me if im wrong but.... if the plates were illegal wouldnt they fail an MOT or is that not tested?

Ive got honeycomb on my astra plates and it went through the MOT without then saying a word.

<A name=thebritishstandard>THE BRITISH STANDARD
The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics on the number plate. This includes:

Visibility
Strength
Reflectivity
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -

The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The supplying outlet is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

Guess that does mean backgrounds e.g. honeycomb are illegal :S

I think it is mate because cliosport.net is not a registered company that manufactures number plates.

  Skoda Fabia vRS

its regarded as personalisation and as long as this is at least 10mm away from the digits it should be legal as far as i know

the company name, and post code, that supplied the plate, would still have to be on it somewhere, aswell as cliosport.net, it cant replace it, both would have to be there

Plates are totally luck of the draw.

I know people who run no plates on the front of elises (they always break if you center the mounting) whove never been piulled, likewise people who literally stick told style raised numbers only on the grilles or a vinyl plate on the front clam.

at the same time I know people whove been pulled for exactly the same. Its certainly a lot stricter now than say 3 years ago. If you take the risk accept you might get caught.

I bought a plate with 3d text 3 years ago when it was legal, could I now be pulled for having it on even though it was legal when I bought it (similar argument to window tinting). I thought the laws were different if you had a new style plate (**51 ***), was told by a copper that I could have any logo or any slogan (and not need the dealer info) on my plate as long as it was an old style plate. Is this correct or not as I might have to get myself some new ones?
