Observations: Std 172 vs Turinis

The tyres on my Turinis are ever so slightly bald so I decided to swap back to my standard 172 wheels until I have my new tyres fitted this week.
The first thing I noticed after driving was that the steering is nowhere near as direct. I could drive in a straight line with the Turinis fitted and swerve slowly left and right and the car would go where I pointed it, the standard wheels just don't seem to behave in the same fashion and the steering feels slightly inert when central.
Secondly, the car does not feel as composed at speed when cornering. You do not feel as attached as you do with the Turinis on and again, the car feels a little inert.
Finally, the ride is much better over poor surfaces. The car is lowered on Apex -40's, over some rough surfaces it feels as though the wishbones are going to bend with Turinis fitted. This is not the case with the standard wheels. The ride just isn't as crashy. I know there was a debate over wheel mass a couple of weeks ago which may be proved by the effects seen here.
In short, Turinis are the better wheel and not just because they look better, though I am liking my 172 back on standard rims at the moment.

At the end of the day the 172 damping is set up with a certain wheel. Change that mass (the wheel) and your bound to effect the spring/damper relationships. A good compromise imho would be to fit the Cup dampers/springs.

I found similar things to you... the turinis made the car a little skittish, the car was very harsh on rebound, especially a slow/medium speeds over rough surfaces.

I do find the car feels much more direct and positive on turn in, the same as you.

Hopefully H & R coilovers will be going on before the spring ( and properly set up, not just wound to lowest setting lol)

The bigger offset the Turini alloys have will help with the feedback issue. Also there lighter whels which helps.

this is an interesting post... as i was just about to change the tyres on my turini's from 195's to 205's.

Am i likely to find roughly the same downfalls then? I went on the basis that the greater footprint will give me a greater cornering ability?

speedlines are lighter than std 172 wheel so using turinis lowers the unsprung weight of the car which changes the characteristics of cornering. Changing for lighter calipers, disks and hubs has a similar effect, the wheels amplify it more as they dont have as much inirtia as a heavier wheel

I've just weighed my std wheels and my Turinis. 19kg std vs 16.5kg for Turinis. So fitting Turinis will also reduce the unsprung weight of a full fat by 10kg.
The removal of my ISOFix bar and acoustic valve paraphernalia plus fitment of Turinis has taken my FF's weight down to 1095kg, a saving of 15kg.

There are even lighter wheels out there... but the turinis are quite strong in comparison.

I found a wonderful difference when I switched to Superleggs... the suspension is allowed to do its job much better!

Your skittishness may be due to the tyre profile?

I'm running 195/45 16's, same as standard.

I'm running Turinis, ITG intsead of standard airbox and no spare. So my car is well over 30kg lighter than a standard FF 172.

I think the skittishness is also difficult to differentiaite from whether its the change of wheel or the f**king god awful state of the roads at the moment.

We had a dry day on Friday and it felt like the old girl was back to her show stopping self again. Like a different car when the tyres can actually get some heat in them on dry roads.

i've recently gone from std rims to Turinis, not really noticed a difference in ride, but certainly in turn in, much improved.
