Odd Knock

mas

  MK7 GTD & Mini GP
was out in the car before, and now after spinning in the wet around a roundabout, there is a very odd knocking noise!...

there seems to be a knocking noise coming from the rear right i think, when i go over bumps and that, torsion bar related? or is there a simpler solution?

thanks :star:

lol, spinning in the wet. Get those budget ditch finders off and get something decent on there! You get your alternator belt?

yeah got my auxy belt, will be fitting that today! .... with the "help" of the haynes manual! lol

will be getting some better tyres soon, just need the moneeeyyyy!

anyone know this knock then, or what it might be?

  S2000
check your wheels are tight, not joking either as this happend to me once even though they had been properly torqued up and it caused a knocking noise. Did you hit anything when you spun, even lightly?

hmmm will check the wheels are tight later, i dont think i hit anything... came close to the roundabout kerd, but no contact i dont think...

shocks?

  S2000
doubt it would be the shocks. Check the wheels and also check all the exhaust mounts and see how much clearance the exhaust has over the rear axle as it can often catch there and cause a knocking noise.

will check all the things said above over tonight when i get in from college.... cheers!

right just went out before, i think my tyres were a bit hard.... so let a lil bit of air out to give me more contact to the ground.... had the wheels off and couldnt see anything odd, the exhaust seemed well held in place... but my wheel nuts were very loose, so, gave them a good tightening up, will go out later in it to see if there is any difference :)

  S2000
probably was the wheel nuts then. Also, if your rears had too much pressure that could explaing your crap handling in the wet, with the back kicking out etc.

much better in the wet, the heavens opened before just as i was finishing the pressures and work, took it out and it handles so much better now! thank god that is sorted :)

just need to see if i get this knocking noise again, not had it so far!

need to sort out my squeeky breaks, a bit of the old copper grease should sort that tommorow, and will also tighten up my auxy belt!

  S2000
good to hear you got it sorted. I didn't even think of the tyre pressures when you mentioned your problems, but now it seems like the most obvious thing, lol.

dons, you know on the 1.4rt... well im puzzled about my auxy belt, i have a replacement one, but i looked before and cant really see much wear or exessive movement, there is the other PAS belt though which i think might be the cause of the squeek?

i mean, the auxy belt has teeth on it, but the pas one just seems to be smooth, with lines running down its middle...

any ideas?

  S2000
tbh I don't really know about the belts on the 1.4 - never had to do anything with them. I didn't realise the aux belt had teeth, but if it does then the cause would have to be the PAS one as theres no way the aux belt could slip. As I say though I'm not too sure about the belts, just going from your description.

If your not getting any help anywhere, try posting over on retro-renault.co.uk. Chris H on there is like a Renault encyclopedia and will most likely tell you your problem.

cool thanks for that.

yeah i was thinking, it just cant sqeak, has grooved teeth, like little triangles in it, which i think grip on to grooves on the pulleys.

it sqeaks after a good thrashing, lol.... give it a good rev and it will go, then come back 2 mins later, after thrashing, if i turn the engine off and on again, it will squeak on start up... and if i really thrash it, at the start of each gear change :( lol

  S2000
mm, do the teeth match up to a toothed pulley or anything? (in the way the timing belt does) if not then it could still slip, but if it does then it wouldn't slip unless the belt was totally buggered

i will get a good look at it either tommorow, or thursday when im off college :)
