Odd problem happening

Ok, now im fairly mechanically minded but this problem is really confusing me......... it relates to a '96 1.9 diesel

Now i know that one or both CV joints are on their way out due to noise on full lock or when i take a very sharp turn at slow speed.

I drove a couple of hundered miles at the weekend and the sympons that i describe came and went. This confuses me.

Essentially the car 'felt' like it has an ovan shaped tyre, it felt like ot was bouncing, with the frequency linked to the rotation of the wheel. At various speeds you could also hear a drumming noise that was consistent with the speed.

Oddly though the noise was sometimes present at 40, or 50, or 60 but at other times the ride was smooth(er) with less noise.

The problems seem to relate to the drivetrain, steering and suspension because the problems continued even when clutch is pressed or gear was in neutral.

The worse sensation happened after coming off a roundabout or turning a sharp corner. At some stages the car (at low speed) even wobbled left and right. Although at some point the car drove ok - i.e. without this extreme wobbling.

I checked the wheel nuts were tight.

So im confused. the pulling did not cause the steering wheel to shift. I would have expected some movement!

Any suggestions out there?

My girlfriend's car once did all sorts of odd things like that, strange tyre movements and that which you couldn't pin down to anything in particular - fresh rubber cured all.
