it will specify a range of grades in your hand book. If it does not then you should use the manufactures recommended spec. 5/30 from 5/40 won't make a huge difference but it will be thinner.
the first number e.g 5W is for 5 "winter" and basically means it can be pumped with the same effort as a 10W but at lower temperature so is better for cold start characteristics. The second number is the measure of viscosity at 100 degrees c. effectively engine operating temp. So 5/30 is thinner when operating than 5/40

cheers for the info, do you recon it would cause any damage whilst hot? any bearing damage etc?

My best mates brother told me to only use the oil that is specifies in the handbook :)

haha somebodys been on the funny pills :clown:

I think in the handbook (172 handbook that is) you can use anything from 0W30 - 15W50. 15W is still OK to -15 celcius.

The 30 grade oils are normally regarded as good for fuel economy if I remember correctly.

Unlikley to cause bearing damage but it's simple really, check the handbook and use what ever it specifies or the range it specifies.
