if you're a hippy then you should buy one 
It's purely there to "catch" the oil that is sometimes spewed out by the engine and normally gets "recycled" ; sucked through the induction setup to be burned.
Environmental issues/laws prohibit drops of oil to be vented to atmosphere ; the last 15/20 years i'm guessing ?
