Oil just fell out of my car :( Help please

Hi guys, some help or advice would be much appreciated.

So I was parking my car up earlier and the steering went a little heavy then went fine again (Engine seemed fine) I get out the car and find that my car has dumped a load of oil on the ground.

It appears to have soaked everything on the left hand side of the engine and squirted a little oil up onto the underside of the bonnet.

I turned it on to try and get it home (1 mile) It started fine and seemed to be running ok. I got 2 meters and the engine cut out and would not turn back on.

Does anybody have any ideas what this might be?

Check the dipstick .. any oil in the sump ? I'm guessing not. Get your head under there and have a look see what's going on ! Might be difficult if you're not at home, as the lower engine cover will be in the way etc.

When you say left do you mean offside or nearside of the car? Checked the level on the dipstick?

There is definitely oil still in there as there just wasn't enough on the ground for it to have emptied itself completely. I reckon more than half or maybe a little more on the ground.

Its home now... breakdown cover is awesome!

Thought the same checked level and was absolutely fine. Oh and the engine management computer thing is saying low oil aswell

Yes the red STOP one, dont think anything else is on

If you have breakdown cover why would you risk damaging your engine by driving it?! It sounds like its going to be expensive.. get your wallet out.

It really needs looking at to say where the oil has come from.... and urgently. It could be an oil seal, dephaser solenoid, cracked block, etc

What did the recovery person say , did they not try to diagnose ? Your best bet now is to get it trailered to a reputable garage for investigation. Starting it up after wasn't the best idea either

I've never seen the point in threads like this.

It's obviously pretty serious considering it has pissed oil everywhere, and in the nicest possible way you dont sound very clued up, so even if someone can tell you what the problem is you're not exactly going to be fixing it yourself so why not just take it to someone who knows what they are doing?

I had this on my 206 GTi in the cold weather a breather pipe frozen up and caused huge pressure in the block, the oil started to shoot out the dipstick. I yanked the pipe off, topped the oil up and she was fine.

Breather was £10 from Pug, god they had cheap spares looking back...

To be honest guys all I was hoping is that someone might have heard of this before and would be able to give me and my brother somewhere to start looking... a few people have so thank you

I had totally forgotten I had breakdown cover until I got home, so then rang em up and got it recovered.

And yes I do "have a clue" and unless its something pretty major internally will probably do it myself with my brother.

support the engine with a jack on the sump(and a block of wood). iirc you can take the upper engine mount off and casing and have a look at you're belt and dephaser if its soddened in oil then its a specialist job mate

Did that this morning

The belt is very slack and the dephaser has a chunk missing from the teeth bit :S... The belt also has a hole in it lol... irony is i've been getting quotes for getting the belt changed over the past week

Its heading off to be repaired next week
