Oil leak

  Clio 172
Just got the car yesterday and managed to get a look underneath it on a pit at work. There is a lot of oil leaking fron just under the back of the engine bay.

Anyone any ideas. I noticed the gearstick jumping back and forward and it looks like theres oil on the bush underneath.

Not too clued up on the clios as i just got it yesterday so any help would be appreciated folks

Cheers

Could be a number of things, can you take a pic. Is it all below the exhaust manifold? Is the oil black or gold? Could be oil leaking from the back of the sump seal. Could be the driveshaft leaking grease and splashing the back of the engine or could be a gearbox oil leak. Try checking the gearbox oil level by undoing the butterfly bolt on the front of the box.

not from the cam cover is it dripping down the back of the engine, have a look over the top behind by the manifold.

Commom thing on the RS is the cam cover bolts wiping

I just took the plastic sump guard off and there was a little pool of oil on it. It seems to be dripipng from between where the gear box joins the engine. I took photos but cant figure out how to upload them lol

sounds like rear main crankshaft oil seal if its between the box and the engine, gearbox out if so...

there seems to be a hell of a lot of movement in the gear stick when accelerating. i'll get my mate to have a look at it. Just got the car and im getting worried :)

Just had car looked at today, guy reckons the headgasket is gone and oil is leaking down the back of the engine. Im still not sure but im getting it looked at tomorrow in detail by someoone else. I took the engine cover off and noticed all the little recesses underneath had little pools of oil in them aswell.

Was kind of hoping it wasnt the Head gasket aswell. rear shock is also gone which would explain the crap handling and kicking out going over bumps.

Wish i had it checked before i bought it :(

Are you sure this isnt the last owner who's spilt some oil when filling up or left the filler cap off then realised and replaced ? The former is very easy to do on these.

Pretty sure if oil from a Head Gasket problem had got so bad to be sitting on the recesses on top of the rocker it would have blow up by now lol

Take it to a Reno dealer for a check fella. They dont charge for diagnosis (or didnt used to)

I finally found out last night that the problem was not the head gasket. I got a second opinion from another garage who told me that the crankshaft seal or sump gasket was the culprit. He said they will replace the sump gasket first to see if this cures it as the crankshaft seal is gearbox out. He also told be that the bottom engine mount rubber has jumped out and is causing it to rock back and forth.

What a relief :)

Not the greatest start to renault ownership.
