Oil leak :(

  BMW E36 328i Sport
Noticed I've got an oil leak a few weeks ago and been keeping an eye on it. Got it up on axel stands yesterday and can't see where it's coming from!! It seems to be coming from the timing belt side of of the engine and either beside the timing belt or at the back of the block.

Any ideas where it's leaking??

Where are common leaks?

Here's some pics not very good but they might help.

Yeah I tryed checking there but it didn't seem to be coming from the rockers. Such a tight engine bay to work in I can't see much.

Check its no PAS fluid from the pressure sensor? Looks like oil, and leaks tend to be around that area.

Thats what mine has

list of possibles is

rocker cover
camshaft seal/s
breather plate
Dephaser center cap

has the cambelt been done? I've seen incorrect oil seals on the dephaser pulley/inlet cam cause huge oil leaks

Hmm I did think it looked a bit messy I'll take another look but the engine oil level has dropped over a few months.

Yeah the belt was done not long after I got the car and it didn't leak before the belts were done. I (Paul at rs) noticed it was low as the oil light came on only a few weeks ago and I hadn't noticed a leak until then.

Well I've had another look about and the oil is definitely coming from the timing belt side of the engine and not the back, oil is on the top of the alternator. If the oil is leaking from the cam seals or dephaser does that mean it's a timing belt off job?

How can I tell if it's the camseals or if it's the dephaser?

remove the engine mount cover bitty (very technical i know) and you will see in. Support the engine with a jack under the sump, bit of wood between the jack and the sump obviously, then romove it.

Good luck with it!

I'll have to give this ago I think, which bolts need removed to take the cover thingy off?

This is really anoying! so far I can't find the leak and the closest specialist is rs tuning I think which is about 5hrs away. I don't want to go all that way for it to be a simple job.

Fred I thought it might be pas fluid but the engine oil level is dropping.

I hate it leaking oil as it gives the impression to people that your cars a banger :(
