Oil warning

  Disco 5 ,Monaro VXR
Hi guys has anybody else had probs with thier sensor for the oil has mine is constantly flashing even though i top the oil up reguarly, or does it show if you have to much and to little and i have over filled mine slightly?

I had this problem with mine a while back, Renault had a look and couldn`t find fault although in fairness to them it was intermittent. I tried topping up and keeping an eye on my oil levels and it still happened occasionally.

Then, the light stopped coming on and hasn`t come back on for ages now. Weird !

Mines doing it. My garage said it could be a dodgy sensor because it comes on at idle speeds but rev over 2000rpm and it goes off and 1000 to 2000 it flashes on and off. But some times it comes on all the time and some times it stays off. My oils ok and the garage couldn't find anything wrong.
Its going back in for a new sensor anyway see if that sorts it out....

I check mine about once a month. It doesn't go through any though Ive not topped it up since I canged the oil a few months ago.

I hear they do burn oil though so I guess it depeds on your engine, what are your exhaust fumes like? colour, smokey?
Checked for leaks? No patches of oil where you park up?
Sump nuts can also leak...

Should i trust the oil indicator on the dash, or should i always check the dipstick?

Id ALWAYS use the dipstick mate my dash nearly cost me a new engine!

everytime i started the car i got the usual "OIL OK" message and when i pressed the button it showed it as full, then checked the dipstick one day when cleaning the engine bay and found it half way UNDER the minimum mark (I had an oil leak) sorted the leak and toped it up and even although now im down to half way between max and min on the dipstick the dash says its full. when i do the fault finding thing with the dials (see the sticky at teh top of this thread) it shows up an oil sensor fault.

common problem apparently

The engine allowed to burn under Renault spec 1 liter ever 600 miles.
SOme people have had dodgey sensors get it chnaged under arently assuming you still have one.

Old thread revived... but Edde, are you saying that if your warning light came on, then you put in 1 litre of oil that 600 miles later the warning light should come on again yes?.. i seem to be putting a litre of oil in every 800 - 1000 miles

Well if your car burns more than 1 liter per 600 miles then Renault will say its a fault. In reality they'd have a look if you burned more than 1 liter per 1k as that a fair bit.
Some engines nver burn any oil my dci has neve burned a drop in 60k my williams burns 1 liter in about 2k maybe a bit more on track. Its just depends some engine burn oil some don't usually the quick cars don't burn oil as it means there engine rings are making a better seal.

It shouldn't burn any, the only time it does is when there is a leak or dofgy headgasket or piston and or rings, if oil cannot enter the bores then it should not burn any.
