when i say i havent bothered looking in the handbook, this was an option to me when id just bought the car,but now i cant find the dam thing!

dippy stick is at the front of the engine, down towards the bowels.

i topped up with 10W40 magnatec

though I have got some tasty Elf semi 10w40 to stick in.

1700 miles is a bit too early to contemplate a full change yet.

Theres a cover on the 172, its to the left hand side of the engine, just clips off, then theres a yellow oil filler underneath.

Yes, there is a dipstick as well as an oil level guage on the dash. The dipstick is a pain to get at though, at the front of the engine, but the gauge is easy.

When you turn the ignition on and it says "oil ok" on the little display, you can then press the trip reset button next to the display and it will show a series of little blocks indicating the oil level.

i.e. Full = Min [] [] [] [] [] [] Max or 2/3 = Min [] [] [] [] - - Max

More blocks = more oil

Just top it up for now, as new cars use oil for the first few thousand miles, so you need to check it regularly and keep it topped up.

Mines just had its first oil & filter change at 6k miles.

The stuff thats in there is Elf 10W40 semi-synthetic, but you can use any good 10W40 semi-synth that meets the ACEA A3 standard (says on bottle), so something like Castrol Magnatec (I use this) is fine.

Dont just throw any old crap in there...

p.s. if you wanna meet up sometime as were not far apart. ;)

Someone said magnatec makes it sound like a tractor, im using, or gonna use when i get around to changing it CarLube, Triple R 10W40 semi-synthetic

Running Magnatec in mine now and its fine...

Im hearing conflicting reports - Ive always sworn by Mobil 1 but its 0w40 fully synth. Is this going to bugger my engine (new 172 thats only done 1.5k) if I change it now and every 6k? Or should I stick with the semi-synth that it comes with? (Id still change it ever6 6k/6 months)

Well for starters a 0W40 oil is too thin for the 172 engine!

Also, I wouldnt be changing to fully synth yet as you aint got enough mileage on the engine. Once you get to about 10k miles it will be ok to swap over as the engine will be nicely bedded in by then.

Ive change mine recently (at 6k) and used 10W40 semi-synth for now, as thats what Renault recommend.

Had an interesting conversation in the dealers today with an older guy that has a 172 cup. He said that he ran his on Mobil 1 for a while and got valve rocker noise on cold starts, (Mob1 is 0w40), he said when he went back to 10w40 the noise disappeared. I was supriised as Id always thought a thinner oil got to your tappets quicker on cold start. But asking around everyone reckons 10w40 is better for the 172 than 0w40, so Im getting a change done tomorrow with Magnatec and Ill see how it goes. Im going to change every 6k/6 months anyway.

good oil stops it sounding like a tractor. I havent put any oil in since new  poor clio. So im gonna get it a new filter and some elf 10w40 semi. is oil and filter £50 at the dealer the robbing tw*ts? how much is the official filter from parts? how much should it cost to have a garage to put them in? Who should i trust to put the filter on? - i know some b******s dont

does changing my oil at a non reno garage effect my warrenty?

Well I just got an oil and filter change from Halfords (AA service centre) with Magnatec for 27 quid which when you think the oil itself is about 23 quid aint bad. And it does sound smoother now.
