Just wondered if someone could explain the correct parts that are fooked.

  • On startup (just idling in neutral) every morning there is a whine - I originally thought flywheel, but then not sure if this is something that would only whine when the car is generating traction. The whine tends to disipate when the car is warmer, but I think, does remain just at a lower level. Is this a pre-tensioner? does it mean a great deal?
  • Also, the gearbox is probably chinned - the previous owner killed it in 2nd and 3rd and they both crunch at speed - although normal engagement is fine. when pulling away in 1st and less in 2nd, there is a whine again, like a wur wur wur (ghey impression). The clutch is 'heavy' as well - what does that actually mean?
Any explanations appreciated.

as for the first symptom, ive had all tensioners and pulleys changed and a new pas pump and mine whines for about 15 secs on a cold start. Nothing to worry about, if im right i think its the PAS pump just making noise! My mates ph2 172 did it and so does his ph1 172.

Not very clued up on the gearbox or its issues tbh. All the RS clio's i have driven have stiff as fook clutches!

My 182 wines when cold, also i get a rattle when i get to 2.2k which after many weeks of investigating turned out to be the engine cover vibrating.. not always bad news with these cars :rasp:
