once a problem is fixed, does the warning light go out, or does it need to be re set?

as above, my toxic gas? warning lights on, i believe its prob the lambda sensor, so i was going to have a go at cleaning them and maybe swapping them round today? just wondering if i manage to cure it.. would the light go out, or would it have to be reset?

It depends what the problem is.

If it's on due to the knock sensor it will go out if there is no more knocking for a few hundred miles.

I don't think you will do anything beneficial by cleaning a lambda sensor.
