One for the RB boys.

  Clio 197 RB
I had a go at machine polishing my RB 182 at the weekend, was my first time and I thought it went well. But I struggled to get rid of some of the swirls.
Can you recommend a good pad and polish combo for light swirls.
Currently using Menzerna Orange and White pads and Menzerna polish 2500 and 4000.

Any tips?

Orange is a cutting pad mate that means you're doing something major wrong. I'm guessing technique though.

Are you using a DA?

Clio paint is very hard from factory they use "clearcoat hard lacquer".

There's nothing pleasurable about using a DA. It's a tedious, back breaking drain of time.

Haha. I'd rather tedious than potentially ruin the paint! Good base to start.
Was pleased with the headlight refurb I did with it too.

Im still looking forward to it anyway ;)

Ok cool. I shall try again. How long do you spend, say on like half the bonnet?
Just so I know how long I should be spending on each panel.

It looks pretty good here, but when the light is on the paint you can see the light swirls.

The finish isn't bad tbh. I'm sorry to say but cutting into paint like that with those kind of pads isn't clever.

A simple one stage polish and glaze would suffice for the time being until your technique and stuff improves.

Even 95% correction can be like the holy grail. Takes proper practice etc to do. Guys like Russ don't just read threads and go detail. They practice.

I don't want you damaging your paintwork chasing something unachievable.

Cheers dude. I have a lighter pad as well. Guess I'm just trying to be a perfectionist. Lol.
It does look pretty good to be honest.
Thanks for the help Gally. I do want to go to a training day, but there aren't any local to me.
And yea I am using a DA. It's a DAS-6 Pro.

I'm not a fan of RB one bit, but those pics make the paint look very wet with good depth.

should only be working an area of 18 - 24" square at a time. 2 - 3 peas size blobs of polish on the pad and work it until it hazes clear, somewhere between 3 and 5minutes. Search through the videos on DW to give you a better idea

There's a guide 3 threads sbove this in the sticky section.

The pads are irrelevant if the technique is way off. You just do more harm than good.

I've got 3 Racing Blue 182's in April, two in the same weekend, so I'll let you know what works best when I tackle those.

From memory, when I tried to correct Laura's very quickly a few years back, it was a bit of a struggle, with the paint being surprisingly hard, but a few years on I'll sort it no problems now - practice and technique, as Gally says, is key!

Any aggressive removal of paint is never a good idea - you should REALLY have a PDG to assess how much you're removing. Sure you can hit any car HARD and remove swirls - the 'art' is doing it with removing as little clearcoat as possible, preserving the life of the paint on the car. This to me is VERY important in my detailing approach.

Cheers Russ. I will practice more with a less aggressive combo.
See how I get on.
Im detailing my GF's NANs Volvo tomorrow to get some practice in.
