Out with the old... (new car)

...and in with the new.

After 2 1/2 years of the Clio, I had finally had enough. I have been wanting to get rid of it for ages, but I didn't really know what I wanted to replace it plus I had major negative equity on the car for some time. Managed to get £4k for it from VW so I was quite happy with that.

I looked at loads of cars before settling on the Jetta (197, 207GTi, Golf, Corsa VXR, Volvo C30, Astra Sri) but in the end I decided I didn't want a hot hatch, I just wanted something that was quick, comfy and f**king massive lol. Basically something at the other end of the car spectrum to the Clio.

I know it won't be to everyone's taste, but as I was taking the pics for another forum, I thought I might as well stick them on here as well.

What specs it that made? 1.9 TDI?

Bet it shifts, gorgeous.

It's SE spec (they come in three, S, SE, Sport). I wanted the sport, but being quite an uncommon car I could not find one - in my price range - in Edinburgh, and it's not really the kind of car that you would travel 100's of miles for. Nah, it's the 2.0TDI 140. I would have liked the 170, but I don't think my insurance would agree. Might remap it when the warranty runs out just for a bit of fun.

I've had a 1.9 TDI DSG as company car before, massive like you say, boots huge and actually bigger then the Passatt strangley! Comfy, well specc'd, I had the S, diesels are fecking noisy tho imo, don't handle, but for a big comfy car there very good imo and very well priced.

Yeh the diesel is very noisy/clattery at low speeds and idle. Two of my pals have Audi A3's with the same 2.0TDI, and when inside the car, theirs does not sound as loud as mine. Must be more sound proofing. And yeh they are cheap for what you get. The equivalent spec Golf demands an extra £2-3k, but tbh I think the Jetta looks a lot smarter than the MK5 Golf. Overall I'm very happy with it.

iLove Veedubs. Good mpg out of that fella?

Not really, get around 42-44mpg. I may have a slightly heavy right foot. But I didn't buy it for economy, I bought it because it was the strongest engine I could afford.

Nice change.

Not a fan of Jetta's though - my boss his one in a similar colour and IMO they're a bit bland, sorry. Bloody good cars though, comfy and well built, but just a shame they look dull as standard. All my opinion of course.

Still love it. Not had any problems. I still find it a bit of a challenge when reverse parking. I either tap whatever is behind me, or leave a giant gap from being over cautious. Parking sensors are a must. Engine had bags of torque and makes pretty light work of fairly steep inclines. The only thing I have changed is replacing the standard RCD300 stereo with an RCD510 unit (touchscreen, CD multichanger and SD card slot).

No idea what servicing costs are as I got my first one done free. It's on that longlife plan though, despite me saying I didn't want it. Bit of a pain but I'm on course for about 14K miles in the first year so it might just work out. Getting around 47mpg which takes me about 500 miles from a full tank. I didn't buy a diesel for the economy though.

The 2.0TSI would have been nice, but they are very hard to come buy. If I was to buy another one, I'd probably hunt around for the 170ps TDI version. Costs a bit more to buy, but insurance is the same, and I wouldn't have the 'if only' cloud hanging over me. I think that's the only thing I don't like about it, the fact for a bit more I could have had a bit more power. A remap is out of the question just now what with it still being under warranty.

Would I buy one again? Probably, although I think I'd be more inclined to save a bit more and opt for a Golf GTD, which happens to be on my list of replacements (but that won't be for another few years yet).

Alex_c: Lol, it's in exactly the same condition as the Clio in that pic. The colour has made no difference to my cleaning habbits.

Christopher: I can see why people find them boring, but yeah, it's solid, big, comfy and quick. It'll do me :)

When someone drove into my 300bhp sx, I had one of these until I was paid out. I loved it, great car. I can see why you got it, they feel much quicker than they are too!

Why not just get a 2.0tdi Golf? You will lose a fortune on the Jetta! It is nice tho!

I was originally looking for a Golf, but for the same spec as the Jetta I was looking at about £2.5-£3K more, and that was just well out my budget. I suppose you could argue that I would have got that money back when selling the Golf, but I was desperate to get rid of my Clio and was not prepared to wait until I had saved a few extra thousand.

Welcome to 550 miles per tank :D

I've just gone to a 58 plate GT TDi Sport Golf, boring as hell to drive, but it's OK.

Cheers for the feedback mate :) how do you find the engine otherwise? Do you find it noisy?

What sort of average mpg does it achieve around town and on a stop start traffic run?

Ive seen a tsi up for £8k, sport model in black. Looks lovely, but being bigger than a golf im guessing mpg will suffer a fair bit...

The engine is clatery when stationary, which is one of the only down sides of the VAG TDI's in my opinion. MPG wise, on my journey home (10 miles in stop start traffic) I average at best 35mpg, for that 10 miles. Over a full tank, 47 is my average.

I don't think there is any or much of a difference in quoted running costs compared to the Golf. After all, it's 90% the same car anyway. I have never actually looked into it though.

The sport model does look good. It sits 15mm lower than the S and SE, plus comes with the 17" alloys. To complete them though, I think you really need a set of 18" Charleston alloys and a subtle boot spoiler. The US Jetta Farenheight is perfect. Based on the GLI (the Sport over here) but with a few extras.

Sounds like you're enjoying it mate. Im looking at 3 cars at the moment, a 56 plate jetta sport 140 tdi in grey, 85k motorway miles. And a 55 plate focus st in blue, 60k miles. Also seen the tsi ive detailed above. Ive no idea what to pick!

Very different cars!
