Overheating

  Clio 172 ph2
Hi all, my 172 gets hot quick and then starts to overheat, I was told its water pump by the guy I bought it off but the pump doesn't seem to whine/rattle. Stat opens as it should, no oil in the water or water in the oil, heaters work and get hot. Anyone had this before?

Try taking a hose off and get some one to turn the car over and see if any wster is pumped out when cold

I've already put a new stat on it just for process of elimination. Are the gauges known to be faulty? I'm not willing to risk it boiling up and cooking itself. When the thermostat opened and the top hose/radiator started to get hot the coolant in the header tank was still stone cold, is this normal? I'm a vaux man so although I have a little French experience they're not really my field

Tbf mate once an engines too hot to touch doesn't necessarily means its overheating, none of us have asbestos fingers lol. The temp gauge will shoot up to half, sit there for a while then start shooting up into the red

I didn't realise you needed asbestos fingers to see if an engine is too hot. I must have missed that class.

Used the search bar.
My 172 has started overheating tonight.

The gauge showed its usual central positions then fluctuated between that and just into the red/danger zone.

It kept changing and moving about during my journey home. 100yds from home the stop light and some other of which I cannot Remember flashed for 5 seconds then went off.
The temp level continued to fluctuate.

Home and parked up and there was no smell of anything unusual and the bonnet was not hot to touch.
Unfortunate I know nothing about the car apart from nuts and bolts so can someone educate me on the cooling system and point me in the right direction?

Cheers guys.

Hello again.

Checked the coolant level today, it was pretty much empty. Filled it up half way between min/max. Drove to work, around 3 miles and its empty again.

Noticed that there was a bit of steam coming from the passenger side of the rad.

Can anyone please help????

Whip the airbox off and take a look for any obvious signs of the rad being wet/damp.

It should be pretty obvious once you look at it. You could always start it up and look for the origination of the steam you are seeing.

I will do then, The steam certainly came from the airbox end of the rad. I take it they are not repairable and do require replacement?

Is the rad easy enough to replace? where can they be bought from?

Thanks again.

I would buy one of these, BIGASH recommended it to me when mine went.

Pretty simple to replace should be able to do it in a few hours, you don't even need to get it in the air if you know how to get the bumper off without taking the wheels off.

Thanks for the info mate, Did you use one of those then?

Is it just a case of draining the system, remove old rad fit new and refill? I am clueless about this but capable of following instructions.

Nah I got one off a member but that was only as I had a trackday the following day and needed it fixing ASAP.

It's simple, you will need some Renault Type D coolant from Renault Wolverhampton on here and a few spanners/pipe grips.

Just take the bumper off and remove the slam panel. Disconnect all of the pipes from the old rad and its just as simple as removing the fixings from the old one and fitting the new one.

It may be worth posting in the scottish section to see if anyone is nearby to help you out, I am pretty sure there are plenty of members in your area.

I think Fraser.J. and Djw John are in your area somewhere.

That's perfect mate, cheers for your help.

Yeah they are pretty close by but I think I will manage, hopefully anyway. Is there anything else I should look at or change while im in there and the systems empty?
