owning a forced induction clio

  KTM 990 SD / S60 D5
Looking to s/c my clio and I am concerned about the reliability,I know s/c turbos ect have been discussed a lot so I am only looking for people who have owned a forced induction clio to hear there comments on reliability and that's it,no my brothers mates uncle had one and....This would be really helpful for me as I don't want to spend a lot of money only to regret it.

People seem to do the conversion then sell on half a year later... No idea why :/ thought I'd mention that

F**k me the very first reply lol people I want this to be a helpful thread that will help people wanting to go down this route,if you have owned a forced induction clio then please post if not don't,and if people do then please lock the thread asap.

My mate had a 172 with a turbo conversion running a modest 230bhp on low boost (9psi if remember correctly) the only reliability issues he had was the gearbox, it ate 3 boxes within 8,000 miles

The same with people that turn them to track cars. Not enough thought goes into it before going ahead with it. Do LOTS of research and think about it A LOT.

He does and he used it for dragracing, but 172/182 gearboxes are made of plastacine.

Scoff has a renault 5 with a turboed f4r running 570bhp

Sorry, I didn't mean to defecate on your rainbow, I just thought I'd point that out and hopefully get a reason why, I'd recommend doing a search and finding out who's owned them/ still owns them... Pm them an ask how they are to live with or why they sold on <--- im genuinely intrigued as to why people build such awesome cars and then sell them.

Alternatively speak to ktec, they did the first turbo'd 172 and have been developing the force induction clios for years. I think they'd be able to answer any other questions you have :)

Hope this helps and makes up for my first post lol

Think I will just sell the clio and go back to another B5 S4,that will make a change sell it before the conversion lol

Mine has been fine used it for drag racing and just got back from my first track day. On both occasions it was driven very hard and it's never missed a beat overheated or anything. Really impressed with it. The only thing it dose wrong is 8mpg on track which I don't like lol

Mines been as reliable as expected, few problems but nothing unexpected and nothing major, especially for a home built one. I did mine plus cambelt for around 4k but binned nearly all the renault sensors and fitted proper ones. Both Ktec and rs keep all existing sensors

I'm running more boost than a standard engine is capable of hence the few problems. If you go Ktec or rstuning sc you'll get about 245bhp at 0.45bar, me and Adey are both running 0.75bar.

Main reason last week for my 'wanting to sell' rant was a bad week buying a new Megane with more problems than Houston mid Apollo13. I took it our last night and love it again, all I'll say is it will never be enough power. 2 weeks after being mapped, both Adey and I upped the boost for more power.

So although it's circa £4k to start off, allow another £3k 12 months later when you want to forge it

Its been fitted about 8months and its the Ktec supercharger kit it was a daily for a while but now just a sl&g

What problems things I could sort myself, don't want to take it to a specialist all the while, plus tour de force is closest to me and Matt dosn't seem to think it would be reliable s/c or turbo.

I'm really looking into doing this on my own 172 an will also be carrying out all the work myself, do you by anychance bomber have a list of parts needed to carry out the conversion?

Many thanks Dan

It's one thing having the conversion done it's another repairing it when it goes wrong, mine has a slight detting problem that neither Paul at RStuning, me or stevieh could work out, I'm putting it down to cylinder pressure and going to forge it over winter, even with this problem mine has not failed or broke over nearly 4k miles in 5 months, your main problem will be gearbox if the conversion is done right.

  Astra GSI, 172, Golf
you want a dci gearbox on there too for the longer ratio's.... i erm.. happen to have one available ;)

Tbh, it was a frigging nightmare and wouldn't have done it without Adey. First off you need to decided what ecu your getting, because if your with Ktec or rs you don't need any sensors changing really. Ktec use the Gen90, rstuning use the standard ecu. TDF EC1 will require new map sensor, water temp, and few others I think.

The list is never ending, but if you read my project thread from about late November it's all in there

Nope EC1 can run with all the standard ones. You need to change the map sensor regardless of what control you use.

mines fine, engines on 100k and still going strong and as bomber said we run more power than the normal kits. i have done one gearbox but the curent one seems to be holding up well, the last one was an unknown when i fitted it, this one i striped and put back together myself. i use mine everyday (unless the boss is on holiday and i get to steel a van) and bar a few electrical faults with the car itself (nothing to do with the sc) the car hasnt let me down, there has been a few development changes along the road but no mean failures.

the car has a very hard life, track and drag racing and general abuse, she hits limiter when not warm and haseven had swarf in every bore yet still churns out decent power all day every day.

I've never heard of anyone with any issue's with turbo's apart from the lad above having a problem with detting. There was a stretch where S/C clio's were going bang because of the crank pulley slipping, but that's been solved by fitting the woodruff key fitted to meg 225

I think as long as you do everything properly, get some help/advice from people on here and you should be on to a winner.

I know one or two had problems with fuelling, think this was more so on turbo cars though where they tried to use standard set up, think it was more to do with the pump/injectors IIRC.

This is all very helpful thanks, don't mind if the gearbox, clutch, problems arise you expect this with big power in any car,my last S4 had a rs4 box in it with stronger 1 and 2 gear and it still chewed that up,it was dealing with 500ft/lb though;)I just didn't want to have problems all the while since I use the car every day.The thing that attracts me to having a quick clio is that gearbox's and engine's are quite cheap so no real problem if they go bang.

ive got a turbod williams. tbh its been a pain in the arse. its had 2 rebuilds in 3 or 3 years due to failures. probably done under 4k since ive owned it. mapping which is now better is still not brilliant, i would'nt do it again, and ive thrown thousands at it. i would only ever have a turbo again if it was diesel or was made as a turbo in the first place,ie not done as a conversion. this is all my experience, but im sure other would have different experiences.

Who's doing the mapping? Have they done Clio turbos before?

Ah apologies Matt. I forgot we fitted the second CTS for the ecu, first stayed for the dash?

It's a lot more accurate running a second CTS, you can split them and we have an input on EC1 designed just for sharing NTC sensors with other things but it's no where near as nice as running dedicated sensors.

Every days a school day, wishy brain capacity was half yours!!

Back to the original question and... would I do it again? Yes, but I'd forge the whole lot and do it in one go from the outset. It's alot to spend outright but most people who have started upping the power still want to increase it. 245bhp wasn't enough after 3 weeks ;)
