pst files should be avoided. if they're stored locally then you've got recovery issues. you get people storing them on network drives then taking up more space than if they were left in their mailboxes. exchange is a database. someone sends a file with a 20mb attachment to 50 people you got one copy of that attachment on the server. you get everyone moving those messages to psts then you've got 50 copies of that attachment. bad move
as mcbunny says, if pre 2k3 exchange, make sure you do a periodical backup via the normal 2k backup prog (to tape drive whever) as it dont clear the log files untill you do (and you end up with some HUUUUUGE logs, we werent even using exchange for mail and had 30 meg free on c
