Painting badges

Ive painted my badge but now i want to make the lettering in white, whats the best way to paint the lettering without it getting on the main badge? paint brush?

How many coats of lacquer should i apply afterwards?

Anyone got examples?

Would it be a good idea to get a tiny detailed paintbrush from like say hobbycraft?

and would it be ok to spray the paint into the cans lid and then apply that way?

I found it'd be better to get a touch up pen and use the paint from that with a paintbrush but thats just me
