Painting 'the lip'

Im currently refurbing some new 172 alloys. I know its been covered a few times but i cant seem to find any of the threads. I was just wondering how i go about painting the lip and i dont want to use wheel tape thanks. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

I thought people just put the tape where they didn't want to paint, then painted them up ? Then they took the tape off ??

Im afraid of peeling the paint off, i thought of doing that myself. It wouldnt peel the paint?
