past the redline

  RARE Unmolested Corsa sxi
Have any of you guys ever carried on driving past the redline with the warning light on?

how far did you get?

i always fill up as soon as it comes on, and it always clicks off about 4 litres from a full tank.

so i was wondering, how far could i go on those 4 litres that were left before i filled up?

i'm too much of a wimp to try.

i tried it once mate when i was going to change my fuel pump and clean the tank.
it went blank at around 30 miles so i left it running for about and hour still didn't die, took it out about 15 miles locally still didn't die then came home let it run for half an hour revving it like hell, still didn't die so at that point i gave up.
took the fuel pump out and their was about a litre left!

Had to leave the car on an angle once so the little petrol I had left would flow the right way so I could start the car again lol!

My boss was on holiday last week, so I did not get my petrol money. As you can see, I had ---- before leaving, and still made it to work from the Wirral to Manchester. Sh1tting myself all the way though.

mine comes on after 9 gallons....acording to the book its an 11 gallon tank so plenty left even when the light comes on

I've got about 35 miles out of it whilst the redlight is on. I think when it comes on you have 1 gallon left so depending on how carefully you drive it can vary.

My light came on at Oulton last year, managed to few more laps and the drive to the nearest shell where it took 48 or 49 litres. Think thats about as close as i could get it

  2007 MK5 VW Golf TDi
I left it once expecting it to flash when it was empty and I had to get to a garage... got about 30 Miles out of it (Usually displays ---- between 35 and 32 Miles) and had a long walk to a petrol station with a petrol can :(

mine once told me that id got 53 miles of petrol left, no warning light, then......ran out of petrol!!!!! gutted

I often run it down quite low until the 'miles in the tank' bit goes blank and the light is on! It normally goes blank around 25 miles but I've never run out, touch wood!

Isn't 50 litres 11 gallons? I don't understand why my warning light usually comes on a the 9 gallon mark (40 miles to go usually), when there is 2 gallons remaining? I usually continue to run it, even after the 'miles' have dissapeared, but it still doesn't make sense! Dodgy trip-computer!

The trip computer is as reliable as a ZX spectrum.

I bet if you actually worked out the MPG properly, its miles out.

I have only had the petrol light come on once in 3 years. (I think the needle was in the middle of the red). I don't like to run her low (under 1/4 of a tank) as it can pick up all the crap at the bottom of the tank and block the jets. I have learnt from experience never to trust fuel gauages anyway, they are very rarely correct. I do tend to check the computer to see how many miles 'it' reckons I have left before I should fill her up, but again, I don't trust that either. lol

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but my car gets a little sluggish when she is abit low on fuel, so that is normally a good warning for me to visit a garage pretty soonish.

You could debate that last point with the guy on here a while back who had made his 1.2 faster by folding the rear seat down and never having more than .5L of Opti in the tank!! ;)

Regards to the 'crap in the tank' surely the fuel filter will get rid of this before it gets to the engine?

My 172 trip computer reports exactly the same. It claims I have 35-40 miles of fuel remaining in the tank but states I've only used 9 gallons of the 11. Usually the trip computer is displaying 35mpg so really I should have 70 miles worth of petrol remaining.

I don't really trust it and I've never ran out of fuel yet even after running on the empty light for 40 miles.

The easiest way to check is by filling the tank full and calculating exactly how short of full capacity you were at the pump. I usually find that it's consictent with the gallons used reading.

debz the fuel filter will get blocked with any crap in the tank and your right about them feeling sluggish when their near empty but you'd be surprised my car had the inbuilt fuel filter thats meant to last 100k and my car is always run to empty,i changed the filter on 100k it never felt like their was any difference and the tank had no dirt in it so fuel must be pretty clean these days.
the trip computers are pretty accurate if you keep resseting them,if your hasn't been reset for a while and you normally drive slowish if you got out one night and decide you want to have some fun thats where they go wrong.
always trust the fuel light though.
something thats happened to me a few times is the trip computers told me i've got around 100 miles left and accidently i've maybe stalled it and the petrol light will come on and the trip goes blank(whether i reset it or not) and it's not until i fill up next that the fuel "comes back"!

id rather run the petrol down low and pull the small amounts of dirt through the engine everytime i fill up.

Otherwise, if you never go below half, you could in theory end up with half a tank full of s**t. then when you do need to go below that point, whoops! big pile of s**t in the engine :S

Slugglish? Less fuel, less weight = faster? My 182 goes quicker with less fuel in.. ;)

^^ I hear you sneeks... All i can say, its Renault, and its French. Just another niggly problem, but i just get on with it. Same with rattles, etc - It still pulls and pulls, especially in this weather!

^^ My thoughts exactly, especially when using the car on long journeys!

I guess in theory that could well be true, but thankfuly so far ~touches wood~ I haven't experienced this. I know the fuel filter should stop dirt getting through, but we all know this is not always the case and some can get through. It's not exactly hard to clear it but it is a pain in the butt. ;)

I'm not talking 1/2 a tank opposed to a full tank. I'm talking running her lower than 1/4 of a tank, she then becomes (although still pretty quick) less responsive and not exactly at her best. :rasp:
