PC Crash?

  Punto/Clio GTT
right, upgraded the gf's pc few weeks ago now, but recently its been restarting itself every couple of days.

Stability issue?

Ive upgraded the CPU and ram. Could i try underclocking the cpu and trying that? as the cpu is maxing out the motherboard

Ideas? ta

  Punto/Clio GTT
not really, i could whip mine out my pc but thatd mean stripping the lot down = ballache.

psu is about 5 years old, dunno what make/model/watts etc, but thats a possibility actually. wouldnt it blow up though instead of restarting the pc?

Im not overly sure, it will depend on your PC i suppose. In my experience at work this kind of problem is down to the RAM almost all the time.

  182
As said, usually faulty ram or psu. Could be that its not powerful enough for the new system.

  Punto/Clio GTT
right, still doing it, basically the pc is unusuable, bad crashing and sometimes wont even turn on, just a black screen.

i tried to put my ram into it but my ram has a casing on and it wont fit into this motherboard :S

should i just buy her a new PSU and go from there?

the one thats in is a 5+ year old 450w microsoft PSU

  182
Sounds like its going to be either memory, psu or the mobo itself. Only way to find the problem is to rule them out by testing other components.

  Black-Gold 182
^ agreed!

I'd start with the PSU - cheapest option first. Whip it out and try a different one - I'd recommend a higher power one (600W or 750W if you can fit it in the case). It might be the processor pulls slightly more power than the old one, and that's enough to tip it over the edge. Failing that, my next guess would be m/board. It could be something as simple as a slight voltage leak on the PSU!

It does sound like the PSU. Perhaps just a hunch as other people are suggesting, but quite likely to be the cause. In my experience very few people, including myself until quite recently, pay attention to the PSU and what it does. It's the heart of your PC, and if it's struggling then the PC will crash/restart.

If I'm reading correctly it also appears to be getting worse. My money is on the PSU also :)

  Mito Sportiva 135
Sounds simple but have you tried cleaning out the fan? Mine kept restarting untill I cleaned it out and has been a million times better since.

  Punto/Clio GTT
cheers for the replies.

nah i aint tried cleaning it. ill just replace it i think.

also, does any PSU work with any motherboard?

my PSU in my PC is 6 months old, would it work (have the right connections) to fit her PC?

  182
should do, just some of the newer boards have a larger connector. a PSU with a larger connector will work with older boards but ovbiously not vice versa.

  Punto/Clio GTT
larger connector going into what mate? what should i be looking for on my psu.

kick in the dick really as i gotta strip my pc down, strip hers down, rebuild hers just to test, then strip hers down again and rebuild mine :(

  182
the power connector on some newer mobo's/PSU's are 24pins instead of 20 (I think) so the plug is slightly bigger. Its possible that they are both just 20 so won't be a problem.

  Revels Mum & Sister
I think FM's PC will be a 24 pin and hers a 20 pin. However most newer PSU's you can take the other 4 extra connections off. They just clip off. So you can run it 20 or 24 pin.

If it only started doing this when you did the upgrade then 90% it would be the stuff you have put in, i.e one of them is faulty. Check the motherboard for leaking or bulging capacitors as well. They should be flat on top and not domed in anyway or leaking this will cause crashing.

  Punto/Clio GTT
yea it only done it since i upgraded it.

i put in brand new ram from ebuyer, which i suppose i could put in my pc to test it?

  Revels Mum & Sister
Is a plan.

What config of memory do you have in there at the moment? Can you take one stick out and leave it on test. Vista will run on 512MB turn all the fancy shite off, just as a test.

Download a program called memtest, create a boot disk that should test your memory. There are a few Windows based ones but never really used one.

  Revels Mum & Sister
Also might be the Mobo doesnt like the memory brand in there. Try updating BIOS may provide better compatibility with the memory you are using

  Punto/Clio GTT
i dunno the config of the ram, i never mess with it, i just throw it in and switch it on.

in there atm is just a 1 gig stick but i do have a 512 somewhere, ill try run that

  Punto/Clio GTT
im starting to think it could be graphics issue?

does this make sense to anyone? im crashing everytime i try play a game this is the report..

Could be a driver issue. Looks more like a driver issue as it shows a faulting application at the top.

Try updating to the latest radeon drivers, check the card temp as well. Could just be a fecked card. Do you get artifacts when playing any corruption? Does it only crash in games?

  Punto/Clio GTT
f**king PC, i stripped mine yesterday, stripped hers, tried my psu in hers and it was still crashing when i played a game or used like windows media player. either the screen would just freeze our ide just get an error come up.

so i took out my psu knowing that the psu is ok, fit all mine back together and it wouldnt turn on :S

spent 2 hours f**king about stripping it, refitting it, ended up just leaving it as it was pissing me off.

came home from work earlier and stripped it down again and tried it in the gf's.. it worked fine. so i know its something to do with my actual pc, refit it all and it worked :S

anyway, just refit the gfs pc up and its having problems starting up still.

i just tried to boot it twice, it goes past the details screen, past bios etc, the windows bar goes back n forwards, then i just get a black screen.

i found that ram so ill try that when i can be arsed to mess with it again.

cant try my graphics card as the psu in hers dont have the connector for it :\
