PC vs. Console for gaming on 5IVE now

dk

  911 GTS Cab
they are doing a feature on a high spec pc vs. consoles for games.

PC was 2.5k.

pc won the gameplay against the wii, ps3 won the technical spec and then the pc won against the 360 for online play.

Then a worls champion gamer was tested on console and pc to see how much his heart rate increased playing both, it raised by the most with the PC.

ps3 won on technical spec.lol what was it against?..surely with the new quad core cpu's and sli gpu's theres no comparision..gadget show's review's are way off imo....

They could compare PC v Console on a million different things but for me it simply comes down to Mouse/Keyboard v Controller, for the games I play ie FPS their is no comparison to make, Mouse/Kbrd has no equal

If you have the cash to spend on a PC and continually upgrade one then yes but if you like good quality gaming that just works then a console is the best choice.

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!
If I'd spent 2.5k on a PC I'd damn well expect it to be better than a £260 console!!!

what you getting for that a ps2?

your better getting a Dell desktop for £500 than getting a ps3 with a game.
playstations alright if you wanna do the same thing over and over and over again.

boring.

look at the Wii, possibily the shitest console i have ever used. im waving my arm everywhere and the same things still happening. why not just use a single push button and stop fooling people. the graphics are also crap.

£ for time spent. PC will always win! im not waiting for the next generation of my computer to come out.

nah, even when i had a ps2 (when first released) and a shitty pc, i still chose the PC over it, its not all about the graphics. Also, i still play games that would run on a 10 year old computer. <3 hl1 engine ;)

but a dell desktop for £500 would not be able to play games as well as a PS3, to do that you need a graphics card alone that costs as much as a PS3.

No, oh PC geek, an Xbox360. The extra money for the PS3 isn't worth it.

And if you can find me a PC for.... s**t if you can find me a graphics card for that money that plays games as well straight out of the box I'll bear my arse in woolworths window.

As for the keyboard argument - Dosen't really bother me. I actually get out of my house and play sports which increrase my hand-eye co-ordination and reflexes meaning operating a controller isn't beyond me... although I'll conceede keyboard/mouse is far easier for FPS, controller is better for just about everything else football/racing etc

Although if you think a PS2 costs £260 I suspect you've been to busy in your onlin3 clan pwning noobs or whatever it is you do. Most likely with your underpants on your head, masturbating slowly to the 12th new add on pack for Command and Conquer or whatever it is the kids are playing these days.;)

Sorry, PCs for games machines are a pain in the rear end.

Sure, you can pay 1.5k plus for an overblown word processor and buy games for about 6 months before the games technology overtakes the systems once more and you need a new £400 graphics card to run the games at a decent res.

And then you have to go through the HD and get rid of all the spyware the games manufactures have installed on your HD. Thats if the game installed correctly in the first place.

With a console, you buy the game, you know it was designed for the system so it will work with no problems and with next gen consoles (apart from the Wii, but is that really next gen??) the power is there so in HD the games look as nice, if not nicer than their word processing, spreadsheet running brothers. I got fed up with my PC as a games machine and bought the 360 and havn't looked back.

All this perception that you need to spend £1.5k and constantly upgrade your PC is bantha fodder

I haven't touched any component in mine for over a year, it cost have that ammount and I can play FEAR almost maxed out at 1280x1024 with 2AA/4AF, looks stunning

Ive never had spyware or adware off any game ive installed, lol. And surely being able to run a platform with much more games available, and being able to word process on the same machine is a bonus ;) I wouldnt swap my PC for any amount of consoles, unless i was able to sell them all and get a decent PC :0)

I agree, half of that money will get you a semi decent machine that will run latest games with decent graphics settings. And anyway, personally its not all about graphics for me, i still play cs 1.6 and thats on what... ten year old engine, still by far the best game ive played, lol.

PC prob cost me approx £700 built myself, but I do a hell of a lot of digital video editing, dvd authoring and music mixing too
PC still on Socket A o/c Athlon mobile 2500, AGP graphics X800XT-PE etc, etc, No game out there I can't run

PC's can also run extreme resolutions these days, console's have only just caught up to the basic resolutions.

I use both tbh depends on the games.

lol

I've had a couple. One particually annoying bit of unwanted software was installed by Battlefield 1942 (EA I think) whereby it installed a piece of spywhere/adware which would make pop ups appear during the game advertising their releases during an online game! This had the effect of shutting down the game and causing windows to have a fit. McAffee fixed it but the game wouldnt let me play it without the offending file!

Also, any game which utilises Gamespy causes problems with whatever firewall I'm running, and I've tried a fair few! This is symptomatic of a system simply not designed for gaming, despite what Channel 5 might profess!

And all this on a PC which was considered high specced only 8 months ago.

With a 19" monitor (lets say, on average), whats the point in an extreme resolution, you wouldnt be able to notice it!

beg to differ!

Running a MMORPG the higher the better - fitting many more toolbars on the screen at once etc.

Also this stigma that a user who rather use a PC is a geek ? why? If you want the best gaming experience then i'm affraid you have to pay the cost.

Tell your girlfriend/wife you play video games and i bet she thinks you a geek even if you use a console! and even though you play football twice a week and drink 10pints everynight.

^^^ but surely if you are going this high res, the time comes when you need a new monitor to view them as most standard monitors are 1280 x 1024 resolution - pretty much the same as an HD tv (obviously with a different ratio)?

Hmmm, not actually played that game, the only battlefield i have played, and do play is bf2. I did hear that Battlefield 2142 had adverts in it, but i thought they were just advertisements on billboard and what not in game, like a texture in the map kind of thing.

Well, personally ive never had any spyware/adware from a game, and ive never installed gamespy arcade either so i wouldn't know what thats like.

Runnin at higher res just seems to look better and smoother, and i like the way runnin at a higher res makes the in game HUD look smaller.

consoles are better...put in cd ... turn on.
None of this "will my pc run this game" cack. I had a pc years ago and it ran games some times. I usually didnt have enough memory.
I now have a mac for work and a 360 for games.
Lifes to short to Fannny about with pcs

Ummm, I do believe you still have to do that for the last time you said it! ;)

Comparing a £2.5k PC vs a console thats worth under £300 is hardly fair! High spec PC's can be awesome, but they cost alot of money and is it really 10x better than a 360?

To be fair thats a very very simplistic black & white view, most pc gamers know their pc platform & config inside out so this notion that you constantly have to ask whether your rig will run game xyz is utter bollox, like anything else it depends if you know what your doing or not, most people will laugh when i tell them my spec but Im playing HL2 at 1600x1200 with 6AA and 8AF with ALL in game settings maxed out, and everything in ATI tray tools on HQ even with adaptive AA set, looks stunning, plays like a dream, socket A @ 2.4GHZ, FSB213, 1.5GB DDR, AGP X800-XTPE, 19" CRT

high resolutions on a PC monitor are easily noticeable. my 19" CRT does 1600x1200 and setting it to 1280x960 which is still higher than 720p looks crap.

PC monitors visual quality wise are way ahead of an HDTV. it relfects in the price as well 32" LCD HDTV with a resolution of 1366x768 for less than £600.

30" LCD monitor resolution of 2560x1600 £1000+ And the difference is night and day in terms of picture quality.

And you dont need to spend a fortune on a PC to play games. £600 will get you a half decent system that can play all current games.

And all the adware bullcrap etc if your too stupid to run a pc well then buy a mac they were made for stupid people.

  Ultra Blue R26
Keeping a pc up to a decent spec is not that expensive as you only need to upgrade parts of it not the whole thing! I've spent £250 on my computer in the last 2 years so I can run the latest games, cheaper than both a 360 and a PS3!

Thats weird.. I would say mac's are made for intelligent people..

They just work and dont get any viri or spyware or crap like that.. and its os is based on unix.

I can stand the mac os its like vista made for dummies im sorry. Everything is all fancy and faffy. had to use it at uni hated it with a passion if I wanted a nix based system theres always Gentoo or similar.

I wouldnt really know I dont own one pmsl ! I use a PC (granted with linux but...) heh

I'm assuming thats aimed at me as I brought the subject of adware up? Well I'm sorry, if its embedded into the source code on the installation disk by the developer (confirmed by a disc scan afterwards of the original disc) then how the hell are you supposed to avoid it???

I can say when I installed bf1942 i had no adware. 2142 had adware but that was for ingame advertising. Not out of game pop ups im guessing you got from something else.
