PC Vs Mac

In short my PC is doing my box at the moment and really needs kicking into touch. Do i replace it with another PC or go mac? I only use the machine for web browsing, msn (when i can get it to work!!), audio and visual stuff not for gaming or any work/accounting useage. Pro's and cons for both, i know in the past people mentioned with mac's they've suffered no virus problems at all which would be nice.

Stay away from the donkey p**n and your pc will be fine Loony.

Mac's look good but are they not about to change the architecture to something similar to the PC?

what's up with your pc? Sometimes a simple format and reinstall of the OS will improve things a lot.

This thread is going to get ugly...

Mate before you get any PC/MAC lovers just try them both and make your mind up yourself. Apologies for the limited advice but it really is the only way to answer your question.

Simon, in short its, old, s**t, running windows 98 and incapable of running newer and this is causing me a headache with all number of things. It's dustbin time for this POS.

Go and find a Mac and have a play with it, that's the only way you'll know if you want one.

I had PCs for years and changed to a Mac a year ago. Couldn't be happier. For me it's perfect.

I've spoken to a couple of mac owners who've said the same, they've told me the OS is alot more stable and intuitive than windows and that they dont suffer from virus'. The reason im asking on here is that i have a feeling they are more sold on them due to looks/image than actual usage.

not the best place to go but PCWORLD have both MAC and Windows machines that you can play with. Will probably have to ask permission first though, not sure if they are password protected.

Macs are cool... no spyware, not many virii and don't crash. Had macs for about 6 years now and can count the times they have crashed on one hand!!.

All or most of the software you find on a PC can be found for a Mac so you won't be left out.

the latest system OS10.4 (tiger) is built around Unix so you can't get much stabler than that.

Go to PC World to have a look and a play but don't expect any techie help. The latest iMacs are loaded with goodies... even a web cam and DVD dual layer writer. check here..... The APPLE STORE http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObj...T0yN9R0U8WReaE/0.SLID?nclm=iMacG5&mco=5D17DE8

or you could go second hand off ebay but be prepared to pay what they almost cost new as they hold their price for years.

Looks ... yes, they are a statement in themselves, but it's how they run and the security of my data that really counts.

OS X is far better than anything Microsoft has ever released. Many of the features that vista promises are already in the version of OS X that apple has been shipping for the past 6 months.

Out of the box you can watch dvds, edit movies, download pictures from
your camera. It's got mobile phone syncing built in, so it's possible that out of the box it'll integrate with your phone.

Everything so darn easy and intuative to use, there's no registry crap, to install a program you just copy it to your harddrive. It's not just that it looks better, it's better to work with.

Only time I turn on the PC at home is if I want to play with google earth.

Oh and before anybody mentions it, yes they ship with a "one" button mouse, but if that really bothers you, simply plug in a two button mouse and away you go.

mac is sounding tempting then.

Go to john lewis/apple store/pc world etc. and have a play, have a look at the software you get with it. The only "extra" piece of software you might need is office, but I never use that anyway!

Once you've had mac, you never go back ;)

Windows XP has never been anything other than ultra stable for me. And pound for pound you WILL get a faster PC which you can do a lot more on.

Plus if a mac goes wrong ur talking mega bucks to sort it out

i pretty much agree with all the comments on once you go mac.... lol i crossed over a year ago, and now pretty much anooying when using windows...

With ref to the above.... IF a mac goes wrong... thats the point, they rarely ever do. I know if mine does... i have apple care so a wuick trip to apple and its all sorted. Some myths scare people away.

i can see why people like macs, easy to use, look great, and are quick. But i'd never buy one

If you like Macs then great but if they really are so superior to PC's then why is their market share soooooo small?

Why not ???

Personally I'd love a Mac, its just the whole change over thing that would cost me a fortune... It'd be like starting all over again

I'm guessing because PC's are generally a lot cheaper, can be self built and usually come with software bundles... Mac do non of the above as far as I know...

What's market share got to do with anything? Are you suggesting that a metro is better than an enzo?!

Too expensive! a £2k pc would dump on a £2k mac from a great height

Prize for the idiotic comparison of the day goes to....

not really. People who buy a PC could afford a mac. Why don't they? Same can't be said about metro's and enzos. didn't know u had to be invited to buy a mac these days!

admittedly... changing from a PC running purchased applications to a Mac then yes, it will cost a lot to replace all those Apps..... but straight out of the box all the Apps that come with it are far superior than the the ones that come with the PC. Then there's always UseNet.... as long as you have Little Snitch installed.. ;)

Exactly. If you have £3000 it's a 50/50 decision on what to buy. 95% of people would buy a PC.

You hardly get people with £350,000 thinking "hmm shall I buy that metro instead"...

Im not spending 2k, i dont need specialist software of any type nor will the machine be used for gaming. Like i say will be used for web browsing, email, msn, mp3 and video playback and burning discs etc and thats about it. So all im interested in is something with quick easy software thats stable resistant to virus' and adaware without having to spend a fortune very five minutes getting software to sort it.

Rather than resort to changing equipment Loony I'd try and tackle the root problem...

There must be loads of people on this forum (myself included) that are running free AV software and free firewalls who haven't had a single virus/adaware related problem in years/ever.

But your original comparison was based on market share!

You implied, unless I misread it, that PC's are better because there's more of them.

Most people will be using windows PC's at work, they'll settle for what they know, doesn't mean it's better or worse though.

I guess when the intel mac's ship, PC users won't be able to play the (non-issue, at least for me) "speed card" anymore.

Like i say my PC is an aging POS, software glitches and spyware/virus problems aside its reached the end of its natural life and needs replacing. Only question is with what. Im trying to decide what will be best for the type of use it will get.

He's running 98 though, I'm guessing his hardware is going to be rather out of date and wouldn't run XP well - there's probably no hardware worth salvaging from it either.

Either way (pc or mac), I suspect he's going to be buying a whole new box of tricks.

Edit: bah, loony posted in the meantime.
