i hate the 'pc vs mac' arguement, from the mac side usually, its like 'car vs clio' or 'food vs weetabix'

From the pc side it's usually "macs are one button overpriced w**k" or some such nonsense, from a pc owner who's never been near a mac, yet alone used one.

they certainly are overpriced, the arguement should be 'dell vs mac' or some other brand. anyway, its not pc vs mac, its more like windows vs osx, microsoft vs apple. is it me or is it more about slightly stuffy tweedy geeks vs consumerist free thinking liberal radicals?

maybe not.

maybe its just about 2 companies reaping millions out of built in obsolescence?

Overpriced to who? PC owners who upgrade this and that every 2 months end up spending more than they would on a mac anyway!

My 733 G4 PowerMac is going strong 4 years after it's purchase, every release of OS X has further increased the life of the machine by providing a speedboost, the same cannot be said of my 2 years old athlon 2200 which is creaking and groaning, and I only ever turn that piece of crap on about once or twice a year!

What I find amusing is that my G4 quicksilver still sells for about £200 secondhand whereas I'd be lucky to get £20 for the athlon system - despite being 2 years younger!

My best buy is my Powerbook G4 which does everything I could ever want and I know that'll it continue to do that for many years to come. I've got that smug feeling that I didn't go down the Microsoft route.

Mac prices seem more reasonable these days in fairness. I like them. A friend of mine has one. But, and it's a big but, they dont really do anything that a PC can't do. Although I think it's a true ism that the PC tends to need a touch of skill to keep it running properly over time. The biggest advantage I see that a PC has over a Mac is that it's just far better for games.

i use macs and pcs all day at work...I brought a mac for home use.
I hate pc games and running games on a pc. Its too much grief.
Ive Got an xbox,ps2 and ds.
the only thing the pc does better in msn ...Macs are a bit of a rip off tho

Macs are a fashion accessory nowadays, their purpose was for designers like me who ran programs like Photoshop on them. Now, PCs run the same programs so we made the switch years ago. Some design houses still cling on because they don't like change, or want to look cool, but from a non-biased perspective i don't see an actual role for them.

Can't see a role for them??

Bit like saying you can't see the role in the motor car. Its there for whatever people decide to use it for. Mac's are the alternative to PC's.

It been long argued that Mac are far more secure than PC's (granted mainly due to PC's popularity). Now Mac are using Intel Chips, the future which no one can argue is looking rosey for Apple. Especially now windows runs on IntelMac's.

But that only proves that Windows has a use in the Mac world - Mac users are dual booting with XP - there must be a reason for that?

i totally agree with that, but not everyone who owns a pc upgrades all the time. i've spent around a grand each (self build desktop and a laptop) in the past, 5 years say, both are still very quick, and the mac alternative at both times of purchase was twice the price. I've upgraded neither, aside from more hard disk space for the desktop. So to me, that's definately overpriced.

But as has been said, now macs can run windows and pcs can run osx, there's little difference aside from the shiney white case. add to that the fact that, in my case, for what it is used for, programs are near enough identical, and files are cross compatible (illustrator, photoshop, acrobat, indesign etc.) the choice really comes down to cost, and when you're a poor ex student, thats a big consideration!

there are still plenty of design agencies who run macs, just pick up any copy of design week, creative review or grafik. they're also the same people that look achingly hip, tend to wear black rimmed glasses and suit jackets. i know, i've been around them long enough! (thats a generalisation, but i think u get the point).

So basically, pcs are great, macs are great, just depends how deep your pockets are.

Usually people say Macs are s**t as they dont understand them like they do a PC.

For instance, networking, trouble shooting a Mac is a totally different ball game to a PC. Hence a PC bod knows the PC well but when it comes to MAcs hasnt a clue and gets frustrated.

I use a MAC at home and a PC for gaming.

I do wonder if some PC owners have a complex. Dont see constant threads of PC related questions and problems being filled with mac owners muttering about how sh*t PC's are however someone asks something about a mac and you get some really constructive comments from PC owners  . You dont like mac's, you've bought a PC, good for you now STFU and get on with it.

I'm a PC user and I agree with you, except I do like Macs :)

its because pc users go 'yep, i've got a pc' but there's that percieved air of smugness and self satisfaction of mac owners that gets up people's noses. like BMW drivers

Bang on the nose, there m8. Either a BMW or a fully loaded Golf GTi that cost half the national debt of China.... ;)

The old, cliched adage of 'each to their own' I suppose!

D.

But do you go on BMW and Golf forums to merely how s**t/overpriced/pointless/ill advised (fill in as appropriate) YOU feel THEIR purchase was ? Thats the point I'm making. If it really is each to their own why bother saying anything.

In that case, every single PC problem post I'm going to whinge on about how crap pc's are and not mention anything relating to the OP.

You joining me loony?

Yeah sounds like a useful and intelligent thing to do. I'm sure Pc users wont find it irritating at all to be faced with a load of abuse rather than a solution to their problem purely because they dont own the same hardware and run the same OS as i do.

TBH I just think the Mac guys are under a different spotlight to the PC guys simply because they're in the minority. PCs are far more widely spread, and used by the majority. Macs are a bit more specialist and not so common. Ergo Mac posts are bound to stand out more, if that makes sense?

In all honestly, the vast majority of PC users are clueless gimps (in tech terms) who don't know anything about their virus ridden, malware invested machine. Yet they'll still sit there bashing away slagging off Macs - knowing next to nothing about either platform.

Erm, yes is the answer. That'll be Microsoft Office Mac. :S

You also have to bear in mind that Microsoft Excel was originally a Mac application before it was a Windows application.

I must admit I prefer a PC as I use it more for gaming and internet than anything else,
Although iMacs I would personally say are better for CAD/music than pc anyday.

Pro's and cons for boths sides imo, depends on what you want to do application wise.
