PC won't shut down.. Ideas?

Probably quite a simple one..

Sony Vaio PC, a few years old. Running XP.

When I click start and shut down, nothing happens..

Any ideas at all guys?

If I hold the power button down, it turns off fine, and doesn't give any error messages upon start up..

try running the following command from the run box under the start menu or from a command prompt:

shutdown -f -r -t 3

That should force a shutdown...
