performance differences between 16's and 17's

Are there any? the car came with 205 40 17's on and it does not handle as well as i had hoped, its still on std suspention too so i think the back has been lifted making it less stable.

I am sure i am losing a bit of acceleration at low speed too,

And is it just me or are 16 tyres more expensive than 17 inch tyres!!!
