Petrol warning light?

  350z GT
When does this come on??

Had the needle pretty much into the red this morning and the light still wasnt on??
Just wondering if mine was broke lol

In my old corsa it came on soon as the needle touched the red :S

cheers

I find the needle tends to "predict" the fuel quite a lot. If I go for a spirited drive, the needle dives down, but when pulling up back home, I can gain half a notch of fuel.

The light will come on at some point.

  FiestaST(ex 172 Cup)
I know mine comes on when the trip computer goes to dashes just after only 40 miles left in the tank. Not sure where the needle sits at that time, I rarely look at the gauge.

  S4 Avant
I thought my light was broken until i nearly ran the car out of petrol just to see if it came on or not. It did eventually but it was nearly at the bottom

You won't have run the car nearlly out of petrol, it'll have just gone lower than you thought it would go. The light then comes on to warn you that you only have a gallon left

I always fill up as soon as I get the light on but I managed to do 30 miles before I filled up the other day.

  FiestaST(ex 172 Cup)
Can the range be trusted though??

cheers for the fast responses guys

I've had no problems relying on it for 8 months. It works off the mpg which we all know is a bit high on most of them, so take it with a pinch of salt. But once it gets to 40ish the light comes on so you won't run out unless it's REALLY inaccurate.

My dad is murder for it

'your petrol has almost gone'

'no it hasn't'

'look at your needle it has'

'it's fine'

'I've been a mechanic for 30 years blaaa blaa blaaa'

Needle does seem to go up and down a bit, almost like i'ts estimating rather than physically showing what level the petrol is upto, i tend to use the miles left clock, although I wish I never had the p1ssing thing, find myself looking at it all the time.

mine pops on before the red... I have driven 30, 47, 55, and now 71 miles with the light on. I have made a game out of it, and will one day will find out how far I can go on a red light

am i the only one who fills up when the gauge gets low, lowest reading on miles left in the tank i normaly let it get down to is about 80 then i fill up again. Dont like running my cars low on fuel i know there is a fuel filter but thats not the point.

Buy a can of petrol. Stick in the back of the car and just keep driving until you need to put it in.

Not good practice tbh, container is not as well protected as the fuel tank and will not do you any good should you be involved in an accident. Thats what my dad has always preached to me, and his common sense genes are usually on the right track.

Just a thought.

I geneally fill up with a notch to go before the red. If I know I'll be taking a long journey I'll fill up mid tank.

When I have run it right down on occasion mine changes the range to dashes @ 30 miles and sticks the light on. My car gets diven quite hard when warm and my 'combined' mpg according to the car is usually about 29mpg. Country roads to and from work FTW!

So those times I have had a can of fuel in the back on my way to help my mate that ran out was a bad idea?

Not what I meant fella, obviously there is a smaller risk still but going on a specific 'Thunderbirds - International Rescue' mission is a bit different to driving about for days with it sat in your boot.

Fair doo's!

Lol, Google is your friend:

According to the Urban Dictionary, "FAB" from the TV show "Thunderbirds" stood for "Full Acknowledgment of Broadcast," the equivalent of 10-4. Gerry Anderson, the producer of "Thunderbirds," was apparently known for these obscure catch phrases.

Other possibilities

  • There are two meanings. FAB as a sort of countersign meant "Fully Advised, Briefed" -- in other words, like Roger, Wilco. Another angle is that it was short for "Fabulous" -- and this was endorsed by the actor who voiced Scott Tracy.

The phrase was used also as the license number of the car used by Lady Penelope which was the Fab-I. And it is understood that the late Jayne Mansfield had this also as a license code plus, of course, Golden State.

The Thunderbird car -- a six-wheeled Rolls Royce -- was always called the Fab-I, the definite article being used, like THE empress Eugenie!, a class act
  • A further definition is Final Audio Broadcast, as they generally signed off with F.A.B.- A paramilitary acronym, like those used by Police agencies ( such as a 2ll in progress- that is an armed robbery) It is believed to mean Fully advised, Briefed, in response to an emergency call- used somewhat like Roger, Wilco by the USAAF in World War II. can also refer to as an adjective, fabulous- as in Fab Four. it is rumored the license number of the actress Jayne Mansfield was FAB-l Golden State. the Lady Penelope character in Thunderbirds borrowed the license code ( but not Golden State) and the Pink color-of-arm, or rather vehicle.
  • Show creator Gerry Anderson has been quoted as saying it simply meant "fab" as in "fabulous," however it's also known to stand for "Fully Acknowledged Broadcast."
  • Fully Advised and Briefed. used identical to Roger, Wilco by the uSAF and various police ciphers that mean- orders confirmed and understood- will respond- are responding to distress call. as the Thunderbirds were a rescue squad, the cipher was used often. FAB I was the license plate of Lady Penelope, a major character. it is said it was also used by Jayne Mansfield with the Golden State ( California) registery. FAB means, in that context fabulous- and was associated with the Beatles.
  • Short for 'Fabulous'

So it's not just mine. I thought mine was dodgy, it seems to make it up as it goes along! It seems to fluctuate quite a fair bit which is annoying. Oh well, more joys of a clio I guess.

So you always have 12.5 litres of fuel in your tank you never use? How pointless is that!

  Peugeot 308
Mine usually comes on at around 30/32 miles left mark. when it does come on, it leaves the range gauge saying "-----"

Although a couple of times its not come on and the range gauge has gone down from 30 to say 7 miles.

Odd but i trust it

it does get used. just another '12.5 litres' will take its place when i fill up. always better to just not havto worry about ,oh whats my fuel like, will i make it. better for the car in anycase rather than running it on fumes

  Iceberg 172
I believe it comes on when you have under 1 gallon left in your tank.... if you have over 1 gallon the range computer can still read how many miles you have left.

As soon as this drops and the range computer reads ---- then the light will come on.

So the amount of miles you have left from the tank will depend on your average mpg...

I'm getting really bad at it recently as the road I use to get to my gf's which has a Shell garage on is closed atm... so the only shell garage I now pass is on my way to work and I can never be arsed to get out the car at 8am to fill up!
