Ph-1 Airbox, a work in progress

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!
I got a ph1 airbox a few months ago but never got round to fit it.
Philmots came round the other night and i took his acoustic valve out, gave me a chance to have a look at what i was dealing with.

i thought the ph2 box took abit of a torturous route to the space behind the light, as pictured on the right.

so i started by taking the old one out to see how much room i had to play with.
first task was to make the mount which doesn’t come with the ph2 box.
i did this with a piece of steel which i screwed in the hole where the mount should go.

then i cut the top off bent it over and drilled 2 lines of 3 holes so i could file out the holes needed for the strap.

then it was just a case of putting the box in place.

as you can see i dont have the correct pipes so have fitted some 100mm reducers which i had, this prolyl does f**k all for the performance or airflow but makes it sound pretty meaty.

My next plan was to add 2 100mm feeds to the reducers and try and make them pretty airtight to get rid of any heat soaking.
as i discovered theres no way in hell that you can get 2x100mm pipes down to the wheel arch.
so i stuck to 1, hoping it would just bring air to the area behind the light instead,

so, acoutic valve came out, easy job with just a 13mm socket.

then fed my very flexible pipe down there, which cost £5. its got plastic in it rather than metal so its very springy, meaning it wasnt harmed by being pushed past the light fittings.

then rebuilt the arch liner.
then i just clipped the pipe to the underside of the bumper for now.

Very easy mod, and at the minute very cheep. plans are to get a better filter in it than a renault one, then maybe sort out proper feeds, but for now im just £50 notes out of pocket and pretty pleased with the noise and pickup low down.

cheers.

nice one, looks like it fits in well, iv got the cup race car one ready to go on with an itg filter element.

I need one of those straps, only part i dont have yet!
u can get the std bracket for the ph1's from renault.

I like what u have done with the air feed aswell, going to see if i can copy that ... when the rain stops!

one large air hole not 2 small ones, will hopefully get it done saturday morning so can get some pics up

looking good dave, i need to get rid of my acoustic valve and sort a caf out!

maybe a job for you;)

think about the route the air takes from behind the light.

the ph-2 box does a few sharp turns, i hear things about sharp turns in exhausts why not in inlet systems.
this in theory is just 1 turn and a much greater surface arear of the filter.

tbh, im not all for saying somethings better cos i spend a s**t load of money on it, its just better low down, i dont mean 100bhp or anything stupid, maybe not even 1bhp but the engine feels like it was lagging and has now been freeded... a tad.

Fair play...Cup racers use a similarish idea...

Don't see it bein any different to the std airbox tho! :S Car doesn't need a forced air supply, but rather a constant supply from a cold source.

how is it forced? im just making it easier for it to breath. look at the picture at the top of this thread. the top intake, which is the one which is always open has a 90 degree bend b4 i even gets to the filter and then has to do another one back onitself b4 heading off into the engine.
the other hole only opens up when the acousit valve does its bit iirc.

this is the standard airbox for a ph1.

whats the difference mate?

Im sure the Cu racers have their batterys relocated to the boot. Then using the big space left they fit a straight pipe that conects to a ph1 air box. the air box pipe then feeds from an air scoop attached to where the light would be (if it had any lights).

So i guess if you want to take this further, you need to relocate battery, mount air box and use straight pipes so the air does not take any turns.

that how the cups racers do it anyway.

Not sure if you can see from this pic i took but you can see the battery has been moved and note the air intake on the light:

I have a question for you.... where did you get the strap for the airbox from???? The rubber one with the clips on it???? I am in desperate need, atm my air box is rattling around everytime i pull away as its not secured... not that my car is going anywhere with a f**ked head gasket but hey.

P.s Looks pretty cool, all for DIY'in it, i did when i had my good old halfrauds filter for a bit of noise! All adds to the fun!

Aye. Sorry didn't make that clear...In general, the car doesn't require a forced supply...So even making it more linear has minimal effect on the engine. Spent 3hrs on the dyno tryin postions and feeds etc. Nothing in it tbh. Think chris and nic did a similar test with a BMC.

Good idea, same as a maxogen in many ways.

came with the box, was about the only thing that did.

looking at this pic, looks like its £7 from renault.
