PH1 172 Maintance

  VOLVO V50 -SOON CLIO 172
Budget is getting a bit tight so looking at maybe saving a few k and buying a ph1 172 or a hi milage ph172. I prefer the look of the ph2 .... but money is always an issue...
How much is tax, service, common maintance..
Thanks...

Tax is, or soon will be, less than the ph2.

Servicing will be around the £150 mark for minor, £200-300 for a major (slightly more for belts change) - see a specialist, NOT Renault!

Common maintenance is pretty straightforward for modern cars. The 172 don't drink a lot of oil or coolant, keep those monitored and check tyre pressures and you can't really go wrong. Electrics aren't wonderful but they rarely fail on a grand scale.

Best advice is have a search on here mate, lots of varioud guides to the 172...

Tax on the Phase 1 next year is to be £270 per annum unless its a pre March 2001 example.

To be honest mate i wouldnt skimp on buying a "cheap" Renault Sport.

At very least it be looking to spend 3k otherwise not atall

Pre March 1st 2001 FTW!
The ph1s are getting old so therefore require more careful maintenance, like you say though they are not expensive cars to maintain given the performance.
Pre March 1st is around £180 to tax verus £280 on a ph2.
Tyres are cheaper as the F1's are only 15" but apart from this its much of a muchness.
As said you need to spend £3k and make sure its had the belt done.

Also the exhausts are made from chocolate so an aftermarket stainless steel might be a worthy investment.

Thanks guys...
So if you had 3k (if i can the budget back up to that) to spend, what would you go for a ph1 or ph2?

Depends on your interests..

I think PH1's are slighty more roar and aggressive looking and are quicker

Ph2's are more comfortable and look very much like a std clio.. slightly slower than a ph1

  M4 LCI, X1, ZX10R
I'd go for which either you prefer the look of. I had a Ph2 for 3 years and loved it.

So I'd try and get a Ph2 if you can, but £3k maybe tight to find a good one.

Ph2 has Xenons, Climate, Rain sensitive wipers and autolights etc and a much nicer interior and bumpers.

The both go just as quick, but the Ph2 is a much better place to be sat imo.

Ph1 ftw,

Ph2 xenons are nice, but it's that much heavier and more expensive to buy that i'd want a ph1 if i was buying now.

  200bhp 172 cup
get the best you can afford mate like others have said if you get a cheap example no doubt it will need money spending on it unless you are lucky and get a cheap minter

Quicker.....? All the RS range of clios (ph1 and ph2) were 7 sec 0-60, excluding the 172 Cup and the new 197 which are both rated at 6.7 sec. With the ph1 and ph2, the engines are both the same as is the drivetrain, the reason the cup is faster is its 80-90 kgs lighter......and the 197 has.....errr 197ps vs. its weight.

Although the ph1 172 is slightly more dated inside, the exterior shape is the main point you'll choose the car over, its like Marmite, love or hate. When I first started looking into getting an RS clio I loved the look of the ph1, but the handling of the ph2 Cup, and the more modern interior sold the car to me (I will admit I do miss the AC over the summer months and the xenons on the full fat 1*2s look smarter). Also I think the 172/182s are definately distinguishable from a non Sport type, albiet not that different.

Different gearbox and slightly different ratios in the ph1, thats why its quicker,
6.6 0-60 I believe. The cable throttle is the main reason it feels rawer, in the real world though I wouldn't think the performance difference is massive, your best off
speaking to someone who's owned one of each for an unbiased opinion, either fUbAr, or Daniel for example.
