PH1 172 Non Starter

Hi Guys.

I've been to see a ph1 172 this morning, advertised as a non runner.

The guy selling it says it's a problem with the cambelt :S apprently, it was being revved and it just "went" in his words.

We turned the car over, and we could see the belt turning. My dad said that there was no compression there.

The car is advertised cheap, but don't want the car to turn into a money pit.

Any ideas would be helpful, sorry if I haven't given enough information, any more needed and I will try and get it.

it sounds like the cam belt some smashed valves ouch the belt is behind a alloy cover (engine mount) not the one on the out side nt being funny wen i say that craig but sum people say that is the cam belt lmfao

Probably get away with just a new head (or even just a set of valves in the existing one if the guides have survived), but if you are unlucky it will need pistons too, depends how fast it was turning when it failed.

Either way, its not a 5 minute job.

Depends how much they want.

Realistically a second hand engine and cambelt being done is £500-600 so if the car is less than £500 its a good deal.

It's also easier and less time consuming putting a whole engine in.

As said above, probably 2nd hand engine for £300 - get the belts done at the same time +£100

So £400 + what the car costs you.

Thats if you dont encounter more problems.

The car is cheap.

I haven't got the ability to change an engine, so labour would be an issue.

Cheers guys. Big help.

its the other things you encounter when u take the engine to pieces. when my belt went on my old ph1 it took out the power steering pump, and needed a new water pump, also the engine mounts were goosed, etc etc etc. costs soon add up to make it uneconomical to repair it. as said a good second hand engine is a good shout, however i seem to rememeber jamesstone advertising a good ph1 head complete with valves for sale just last week in the for sale section, for £150. perfect for you imo.

Cheers for more replies.

The car has since been sold. So not sure what its been bought for. As spares or to repair.

I have since found another ph1 with 12 Months MOT and 5 months tax that is in my price range. Going to look at it tonight.
