Good man you wont regret it!

Being an older car i guess the two key things are service history and signs that its been well cared for.

The one on that advert has had ALOT of work done to it which is one sense is a good thing but in another tends to suggest it may have been thrashed alot. its been through 2 driveshafts, wheel bearings etc etc etc!

could be a good buy but i would get him under the 3k mark for it.

I paid over the ods for mine looking back on it but it was very low mileage and had full service history so i thought it was worth it. gotta make your own decision based on what you see and how it drives.

That one isnt that far from me so i may test drive it on a day off next week.

Check out the buyers guide. And don't settle for silver ;)

Dont want a black car again lol. The monaco looks gash, red is a posibility if a nice one turns up and that leaves silver which i like. Not looking for a OTT in your face modded car like mine is now :rasp:

My advice is to take your time, i rushed into it last year, have ended up with a bit of a shed that ive gota replace a fair few parts on. BUT thats why i love it..... weird i know but i think its faults give it character :D Ph1 FTW

  Sunflower & Golf Mk6 BMT
Few things to check:

Check for rust on the arches as some have started to go now
Crash damage; does it drive straight? brake straight? over spray on body work or colour mismatch, check spare wheel pan floor for damage.
Does it idle ok?
Check oil level and coolant
Does engine bang under hard acceleration?
Cam & aux belt done?
Condition of steering wheel
Question any fault lights on the dash
Have a look underneath, check condition of sills and exhaust.

Just normal logical things when looking at any car.

they should all be on their third cambelts by now pretty much.

check rear shocks for leaking oil

Most of the ones ive looked at online are due to have cambelt done this time next year. Having said that most of them have been the 2001 models.

If you can find one with an alloy bonnet its a bonus, they were fitted at random and are lighter than carbon ones!

The shift light was also random, but pointless so I wouldnt get too cut up about that.

How can you tell? Is it obvious or is it something that the owner will need to tell me lol

  Ph 1 172
-all phase 1 172 idle s**t due to emmisions or something hense why so many people get the rs tuner which smooths out the idle! so dont worry if its all over the place to much mine idles anywhere between 800rpm and 1200rpm when it first starts up from cold.

-condition of steering wheel is a weakness in the car anyways and can be cheaply/easily replaced(ebay, scrap yard)wouldnt let that put me off.The exhaust is like cheese as are the exhaust mounts on the 172 once it breaks get a stainless steel exhaust!! cheapest way to replace it.

-fault lights have a common failure of serv and airbag light! anything else is a concern.

-check the steering as well as any knocking on full lock.

-also lift up the boot floor and see if there are any creases lines could be a sign that its been hit in the arse.

-silver always looks clean by the way and to be fair anyother colour seems to demand a higher price when buying it!

--service history, CAMBELT and AUX BELT should definatly be changed. dont be put off with a phase 1 thats had lots of parts changed either mine had to have quite a bit changed when i bought it but at least they were new parts.

and remember it is 10 years old now so it wont be spotless and will have gone through drive shafts and what not, these cars are not built for poddling to the shops there built to be hammered so it will go through parts quicker!

think gernerally the phase 1 with the w/x plate on had the alloy bonnets and shift lights. you will no when there is an alloy bonnet because if you lift it up it will be light as hell almost like lifting the rear parcel shelf lol.

Good luck finding one!

Dom: Cheers for the advice.

Ali: Thats why im so tempted by it. Looks like alot of parts wouldnt need replacing any time soon (although cars have a tendacny to break lol)

May have to get you to have a look over the one i buy when i get it for some dollar ;)

  Ph 1 172
got to say that phase 1 does look very nice but the price is a bit steap aint it i paid £3500 for mine over a year ago now! thought the going price for one of these was anywhere around the £2000-£2900
....£2900 for a low millage minter!! there is one in the for sale section at the moment with less miles, with everything changed as well cambelt the works and its already been tastefully modidfied! for £2650
