Pissed off with insurance!

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!
last year i paid £530 protected fully comp.

so i ring up to renew, direct line say £550, i say im thinking about putting some wheels on, they say, we dont touch modded cars.

so i ring the AA. they quote £780 protected.

WTF!

then i get passed to high performance, spend ages talking to some guy about my car and he says £600 but with a £400 excess.

so i have 16" alloys as aposed to 15" and they charging me an extra £200.

does that sound right????

who else do i try my policy runs out tmw at 12!

seems right i think. when i told my insurance about alloys, my excess went flying through the roof.

Excess is indeed a bugger - but fingers crossed it's something you never have to pay. Wheras you have to pay your premium no matter. ;)

Yeah, insurance on a modified car, especially if you are still young is a joke. Even for something as ridiculous as wheels. Try a quote on Quinn Direct as they are happy for you to do any cosmetic modification without even telling them. Try a quote and see. Excess is only about £180 too.
Otherwise the 182 sounds a good plan!

Sounds a bit dodgy to me , an insurance company who lets you do modifications without telling them !You sure you got your info right mate ?? :approve:

Plus they won't cover 172 / 182's anymore .

Wheels aren't cosmetic though - bigger wheels > bigger wider tyres > better acceleration.
Not always the case but this is the logic that insurance companies use. Morethan are the same - they'll cover any cosmetic modification - but getting them to nail down what they class as 'cosmetic' is another thing.

Yeah I've got it right, I've rang them about 6 times to make sure/try to tell them about my wheels and suspension. They don't give a toss! I just keep getting them to confirm they'll pay out, get their name and all that, date, time of call etc. When I rang to tell them about wheels they said, yeah thats not a problem, you don't need to tell us. Then the suspension, yeah that's no problem, as long as you don't increase the power of the vehicle you really don't need to inform us.

Nice one .Good idea getting their name , date etc just in case . Pretty unusual though imo .Most companies want to know about any mods .

I know yeah. I still ring them if I make any changes just so I can say...I did tell you. To be fair though aswel. On their website where you get all the usual terms and conditions that normally read, car is not modified in any way. Quinns reads, Car is not modified in a way which increases power.

I think you'll find bigger wider tyres leads to worse acceleration!

The premium is based on the risk that alloys are a desirable accessory that can be removed easily by a professional thief and are also quite costly to replace over a standard rim. They are what keep you on the road so are more likely to come into contact with a kerb!

Yeah I know - but when I quizzed Morethan over it that was the answer they gave. They didn't consider what actually was the case. But the argument was flawed anyways - it was a 1.2!

right give adrian flux a ring mate there the best once you have ur policy any cosmetic mods basically anything that doesnt give it more power only cost a tenner a time so you could put a roll cage seats and wheels and it'll cost you a tenner!
i'm with them my clio dynamique with a 172 dropped in induction kit full magnex zorst, bk 233 which have only just hit the shops i've had them for 4 months :) cobreau seats , full body kit, lowered 60mm, tints all round,1500k for head unit dvd player screen door speakers,
i'm 21 one tears ncb 8000 miles and garaged paying £1200 :)

  Turbos.
That's pretty good...the thing is Directline were comfortably cheaper than anyone else, i don't really want to pay £200 to change insurers and then pay extra for covering mods.

So ghey, i have spent loads protecting my 4 years NCB, i'll be 40 before i finally get a good deal.
