Playing .avi files HELP!!!

Right i downloaded a familyguy .avi file from Bit torrent ( torrent from isohunt),

But when i play it in Quicktime it is really jerky stop start etc,

I( am new to this so please be gentle....

also when getting torrents is there better torrnt etc

I am using MAC osx aswell.

normally only use for music, but as i have a really fast internet now i wanna get vids,
