Getting my MOT done on Saturday a month early. Car has been firing on 3 cylinders at idle and sits at 1600 revs when cold, 1300 when warm. Too high Im guessing. Had leads, plugs, distributor cap and arm done and the tappets. Im told itll be a worn valve as the compression is low. I took it to a different garage and was told that. Car seems fine at speed, its just bad at idle, not irratic just highish revs. Im told itll almost certainly fail MOT emissions on that fault.
Do you think putting any better petrol in might help the emissions, like Optimax or Superplus? Or am I just clutching at straws?
As much as I love the little RT, I might have to trade it in pass or fail. I need new radiator, rear shocks, and if it fails Im looking at probably £250s worth of head work and probably a new Cat. Cars done 108k miles, gonna go have a look at an X reg VTS on Saturday, sorry to drop this bad news too.
TBH Im crapping it for my MOT, its all Ive thought about for a month or so (!) As much as I love my car, Ive had it 4 years now and while Ive looked after it, Ive had loads of bother with it and spent loads on it, it just seems a shame for it to end like this, on a miserable MOT failure.
How less do you think itll be worth without an MOT? (I could still say it has a month to the part ex garage a Im getting it a month early)
So do yous think itll be the valve? And do you think better fuel will help? (I havent put any in yet case yous think it might make it worse!)
Thanks very much for any help and taking the time to read!
Regards,
Chris.
