Please help a noob with topping up oil

Just checked the oil level and it's a bit low, had a look in the book and it recommends 10W30, 40 or 50.

I've had a look at the guides on here and that's pointing to the same recommendation, however I don't know what oil was last put in. If it had 10W30 and I was to put in 10W40 would this be an issue?

Cheers :(

Not the best practice to mix to be honest as it seperates at different temps but if you're low it's better to have some oil than no oil.

Get an oil change so that you know what is in there.

do an engine flush and fill it up with new oil, wont be expensive. half hours labour and the cost of the oil and a flush

I wouldn't do an engine flush. Heard some nasties through doing that.

Just fresh oil should do.

prob got it on the offer they were doing thats finished. We did the same price which with postage let us do it all for £39. We've had to go up a bit as the cost to us has raised now

I didn't check the thread before buying so got 10w40. Bugger. Is it best to take this back and exchange for 5w40?

I've always used motul 5w40 and it gets up to temp quickly. 10w40 would do but won't heat up to temp as quick and will slightly affect fuel economy too. For long journeys you'd be fine but for town driving and short journeys you want maximum lubrication ASAP.

H'ok I'll try and change to 5w40. I did see some in halfrauds but it said that it was designed for diesel engines?
