Please help, car wont start!

Yesterday, went to start the car and nothing happened. Its like all of a sudden the battery was completely dead.
So I jumped it, the car starts when jumped (just) but the battery light flickers on and off all the time.
Then on low revs pulling away the car stalled again. and needs to be jumped to even get the lights to work!

Apparetly the battery is charging fine (checked with a voltmeter/ammeter - RAC guy did it)

Any ideas of the problem? Alternator problem?

Its a 1995 mk1 1.4rt

Check the wiring on the alternatore there famously poor.

cheers edde. in the garage today so i'll soon find out. can only expect the worse though...
