Please Read... Bonnet Catches

  PH1 172
TBH I didn't think this was a problem on the mk2 ph1 model but now I have seen this post saying from 1998 > I think I will get it checked out. I like the way they say customers have ignored the letter, when really most of the time it's due to them not recieving one as I never recieved a letter!!

Kev - as Ben said above, I just gave the local Reno dealership my reg number and they said it was outstanding. Got it booked in a few days later. That was only a few weeks ago too.

I've had the car from new and lived at the same address even longer. I didn't receive any letter from any party (Reno or DVLA, etc) to bring this to my attention - only from what I read on here.

Does anyone know if the same catch issue applies to the V6 model as well? Jain's not had any formal warning for her car either. :dapprove:

D.

Hey Darren, YES, it does effect Vee's too. I had mine replaced a few weeks ago while it was in having those wheel bolts etc replaced lol.
Get Jain to get a nice new one fitted, its a slightly modified version I believe.

I got a letter recently from Renault on this, saying that their records showed I hadn't been in since their first letter (that's because I didn't own the car then...) which proves that they do at least keep following up cars. I haven't been in yet, but because I knew about the issue through ClioSport I regularly give it a spray of WD40 to make sure it all works freely. Will take it in soon though.

Also theres a good chance that if the bonnet does flip up and dents the roof it could be classed as structural damage and written off

"The couple, whose first child is due in January, are now looking for answers after they first received a letter from Renault in June inviting Clio owners to have bonnet catch mechanisms checked at local dealerships as a gesture of good will.

The Gallies did not take up the offer, but......"

Complete and utter idiots. How the hell can they complain after they didn't bother to take it to a dealer?

Back on topic, going to see about mine. May have been done though as it was serviced/mot'd last year at the dealer I bought it from.

To be honest i would advise everyclio owner to get it checked.

I bought my 1.4 one friday morning, coming home very pleased with the deal, and looking forward trading my 1.2 in the following day :)

so i come (30mile travel from the car) home to sort all the paper work out.
Still with a smile on my face, i go to work.

Sorry for the large images.

However, yes on my 3mile journey to work. half way there up the bonnet came and i shat myself. The biggest scare you will ever have.

the damage: New bonnet, new windscreen, new catches, new side panel (cracked as the bonnet was put back down), New ROOF.

Basically imo wrote off.

So i was gutted. thought i wasnt gunna get my new car.

But, after carefull consideration from the parents they agreed to lend me a bit of cash to get the new car. We still managed to trade it in, but for a considerable less amount.

so im paranoid android when it comes to bonnets =[

Taking mine to a local Renault dealer tomorrow, no idea if my car has been recalled or not but the bonnet won't open via the lever inside the car, you have to push down on the bonnet and find the latch, the mechanic I took it to today showed me the spring kept getting stuck, so he popped it with a screwdriver but that still didn't work, so that kind of tells me it hasn't. Very worrying to read this.

Iv been told if you get the letter and you take it in, all they do is grease the catch to make sure it slides propley.

I always make sure the saftey catch has slid back when I open it. If it hasnt, i grease it asap. PARANOID =[

Took mine to Renault Dealer this morning, apparently there's two things that need doing, the bonnet and something to do with the fuel...argh can't remember what he said but they are doing it for free. Booked in for tomorrow morning and the jobs should be done by lunchtime! But yeah the previous owner chose to ignore the letters...worrying. Glad it's getting sorted now though.

:)

I never got a letter but it was up on computer when i went to buy some parts. They just looked and said it was ok. I keep it oiled up anyway

Regards to folk not getting letters.

I recieved a letter from Renault this morning saying that im not on the Renault mailing list, some folk have opted out in the past and some by accident would you like to update

This could be the reason why some of us didnt get letters, others did

I'll take a look after I get the car back tomorrow lunchtime, hopefully they sort it for me but if not I'll check the side rubber adjusters. Cheers for the info.

I took mine in when I had the recall letter, think they just greased it, not replaced anything.

Mine had been sticking before...

I never got a letter from them, but took it along fo something else & they did it anyway without me mentioning it.

so do we just walk into renault and ask if the cars been checked in the past? or do we need a letter or something?

I just walked in and told them I didn't know if the previous owner had taken it in to check for the fault, he used my reg to find it in the database and upon finding out it hadn't been fixed, booked me in the following day. Quite pleased with their service actually, quick and easy.

They did mine while I had madame in for her service the other day. Pretty sure it's already been replaced, but why not have a third catch?

They did mine last week when it went in for it's 36k service and cambelt. I was not even aware they needed changing!

Its on the system as to whether the catch has been inspected/replaced so just take your cars down.

You do not need a permissable letter for them to check and change it.

It only takes a phone call to book your car in, it's free and takes only a few minutes to check and regrease if ok, and approx 1 hour to replace if required. They may say you have to leave the car with them but just say you'll wait to save your pride and joy being abused.

It really isn't worth the risk and as someone has pointed out if you get it checked/replaced and something goes wrong at least you'll be able to go back to Renault and have something to fight with.

I zoom up and down the m1 everyday and the thought of the carnage caused by my bonnet flying up doesn't bear thinking about.

Just got the car back from Renault, said it would be ready for 11, then 12, then 2 finally at half 2 I got the keys back. They washed it for me though so it's all good. There's some pics of what they did.

Hey all just called Renault on 08000 72 33 72. Told them I have a 02 plate ph2 172. I asked them to check if my catch had ever been done. (As bought 2nd hand). He said that 172 sport on 02 plate was not a recall. Is that correct?

Tbh he sounded like an idiot. He said "Do you know when we last inspected your car it had lowering springs". So I said "yes, Its a 172 its not uncommon". Then he just shut up and said " is there anything else I can help you with" WTF!! lol

Oh an last time I took it for a service, They said, do you know you have a large red wire running from the "primary power system" to the "boom" boxes in your boot.

You mean the battery to the subs????
