Popping out of 5th gear!

Car  172
172 just started to jump into neutral while in 5th if doing more than 60-70mph. Had to complete a 100mile drive in 4th @ 60mph on m5 this morning :(

I had a drive shaft replaced last week and they had to drain the gearbox oil. Could this be related? Changing gear and clutch seem/feels normal!

Any suggestions appreciated

When you back on and off the throttle does the gear lever move much?

It can do so if there is a lot of play in your engine mounts.

If so it might be that when they put it back together slightly in a different place on the linkage its now getting knocked out as a result of that movement.

Stick moves a bit when accelerating but not any more than usual I think.

I've just fired it up again and there's a tinny rattle coming from underneath. Could something have dropped onto the cables/selector? The noise occurs even in neutral when engine is idol.

Stop running it!

Drop the gearbox oil then remove the 5th/reverse end casing. Once done you will see the internals so DON'T touch anything other than the really large nut just off center and to the left (if its not already fallen off). If it hasn't, re-tighten it and all your problems will be solved. Replace end cap, refill with fresh gearbox oil and enjoy.
