Possible gearbox leak...

Hey guys, changed my dog bone today and noticed a bit of gearbox oil around the draining hole and the seal where the linkage goes in. my mechanic said it would need stripping down but the car drives perfect and gears feel great,

Is it possible when the undertray is re attached cause they spilt some oil its pressing onto that part (its the lowest part of the box) and transfering oil onto it ? or should i be looking into it more seriously.

It has been like it the past 4 months so probably worrying about nothing :rasp:

The linkage always has a tiny bit of oil round it. Mine's been like it for years and it's fine. I don't have any oil on the plug, although the whole area can get a bit messy. Try cleaning it up with engine cleaner, run it for a week and re-check it.

As above, the seal where the linkage goes in is sometimes sprayed for lubrication. Check the gearbox oil level and top up if neccesary and check it each week for a while.

CHeers guys, i left the undertray off and no more oil so think it was just the sponge pushing on the ower part of the box and leaving oily residue on it :)

I have just found a piece of sponge (wrapped in black plastic) hanging from the under tray. I'm guessing from reading this it has come from the car and not picked up from the road somehow?
Will it matter if I leave it off or should I get a new one? It also had some very black oil soaked on it and guessing again, it will be from the gearbox?

Yeah, i overfilled my gearbox and the sponge on the under tray soaked up about .3 of a litre. In the end i just removed all the sponge. Not a problem at all doing this.
