pot hole help

Just wondered if anyone could give me some advice. I was travelling to work this morning minding my own business, doing the usual 30mph in a line of traffic when all of a sudden there was a massive bang that vibrated the car, i looked in my mirror and saw this pot hole. So when i got to work i borrowed the digital camera and went back to photograph the pot hole, which we found to be 9cm deep. I have been to a local garage and he said the wheel is knackered and i need a new one.

What do i do can i claim off the council for this?

You need to call the local council asap, go through the whole thing with them including dates times and exact location, photos with location markers will help as will photos showing the depth of the whole, also make sure you take photos of the damage to your wheel.

I would do this today, make sure you make a note of the persons name and position you speak to and also let them know the cost of the replacement wheel.

You will have to be quite firm on this, i was lucky as the council was helpful when i spoke to them but not all are so helpful.

aparently if they have surveyed (i.e driven down) the road in the last 2 weeks and looked for pot holes then the cost is up to you. If they havent then they should pay out.

My dad got a free alloy when he went down a pot hole.

I would also suggest you phone now!

I just had to pay for a refurb last week on mine but it still looks f***ed and it lost air instantly so i would presume it was worse than yours too aint it a bummer, happened to two of my dynamique wheels too!!

the hole looks like it has been repaired before and pretty recently to but all the tarmac they have put in it has disintegrated to make a big hole. i am going to get the car checked to make sure there is no other damage.

What do we pay road tax for?

Im thinking of complaining about my road, I litreally cant get out of first along it and its not a private road or anything. I know the deep potholes now but might try claiming anyway !!!

Im in the process of doing this now, I took a picture of the hole with a tennis ball in it to give it some perspective - and am in the process of sending off the pics along with a receipt for a knackered tyre and alloy refurb quote.

Alymac is a bit of an authority on this, im sure he will help once logged on.

Bit of a David v Goliath......but even that battle turned out ok!!!

Ive got to give it a go, at least they may think about re-surfacing the road, it is so bad, some of the potholes must be near a foot deep !

Happened to me in London. Had a 12" record in boot and that was used as a guide. Record fit in hole and was a good 4-5" deep.

Got quote for a new tyre (most expensive I could) and new Phase 2 alloy of Renault (£180). After many weeks of going through the council, their contractors for roads and suncontractors they said theyd pay for tyre but not wheel.

Wheel werent too bad anyway.

Had a mate who got his knackered in midlands and got both tyre and wheel paid for. Just depends where it is I suppose.

Also play the safety card. If a cyclist hit it..........

Best of luck Chris, my claim failed (as they had recently surveyed the road) and it cost £720 for two new alloys, luckily on my company car, not my own!

I reckon they spend it on stealth speed cameras, those in turn generate more money so they can afford more and more of them.
