poxy gearbox’s

is there any sort of gearbox i can get that is stronger than a standard willy or valver as for the second time this year my gearbox has died this time i am hoping it is just the serclip in the box as my mates willy box done the same 3 weeks back any advice would be helpfull

The newer boxes are the same... My gearbox casing broke where the mount goes then the new box 700 miles later the serclip went and i had no diff....

Waht are you guys doing to your gearboxes? With 180,000km on mine it is going strong although whining a bit in 5th and the synchros are getting a bit tired.

The car has done over 4000km on the Nurburgring flat out as well!

i think i may have set the world record for killing a box, my car has now done 28k miles and the box is f**ked! good ol reno chocolate gearboxs!

Think Renault 19 Diesel boxes fit and they might be a bit tougher due to extra torque from diesel engine, not 100% sure but pretty sure they do, a lot easier to find as well. Think valver boxes suffer if they run low on oil, check it often, and refill with good quality oil of correct grade, its dead easy to drain them and refill, in fact given hassle of engine oil filter removal, its probably less hassle to change box oil on a valver than change the engine oil and filter

Trouble is gear box oil smells like cat piss. I changed gearbox oil on a mates 1.2 clio and it was so bad smelling it very nearly made me puke

Gearbox oil does make you wanna wretch......its hydroscopic too, and not good to get on your skin....plus youll stink of it for days after.

180000km Edd????????

Have you had it serviced or repaired, or is that from new?!?

Mines got 94k miles on it and seems ok, but getting scared as i approach 100k mile - steering rack on its way out already..

I thought they were good boxes but WOW!
Na,

I have spoken to many people about this and they say the valver box cant handle the power of the valver in low gears.

I done mine by hitting the limiter in 1st. Now i take it easy in first every time.

I dont think they are particularily tough either, going to investigate 19 diesel box, think the problem is although it fits no bother, not sure if the gearing will be ideal. Box oil does honk, I spilt all 3.5 litres of drained gearbox oil onto my garage floor by accident, place still stinks of it

Will,

Nothing has been done to the gearbox in 180,000km. The owner before me replaced a clutch though. Its in for a cambelt change now. I just hope they dont find too much wrong with it.

The dampers are original as well!

U may be right but there does seem to be a few that have took over 100k of abuse & still perform fine.

Another phase 2 box has gone, seems like clean16v was right in saying the phase 2 boxes werent as good as the phase 1s.

Does this seem right to all u Valver owners?

Mine is on about 90K unless it has been changed

But seems fine!

JUst had a new clutch as well

Phase 1 K plate

Im glad mine went in a way - least its something less to worry about when its fixed - get a decent clutch and warranty with gearbox - might perform a little better too... just steering rack and snapping timing belt to worry about now...!

I suspect it is the oil leaking tendencies which cause it, says me who has just spent 200 quid getting inner end of driveshaft gator replaced due to it leaking gearbox oil. Hope this helps any1 with a leak near the drip tray.

The drip tray is the plastic bit i ordered from Reno which is actually named that! Now is it jus me or r Reno expecting the gearbox to leak?

Suppose it will be leaking oil tendencies - dont think the boxes run well without it!

When i get mine back, it shouldnt leak should it, with it all being reconnd?

They shouldnt leak anyway but i jus find it funny that Reno have named that plastic shield the drip tray when it should definnetly NOT be dripping!
